JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. OT: some reviews

Cambridge cable Chunky Turtleneck and Cambridge Cable turtleneck
I ordered both in black, XS. Often I size up in sweaters for the length. These are fitted but the length hits my low hip and they're not boxy the way last year's turtleneck in wool cashmere blend is. Slightly thick but soft wool (blend) nice weight. I have a crew neck and vneck from years ago and these are definitely thicker. Not sure if I will keep both, but my black turtlenecks are what I most often reach for.

Double breasted coat in Oxford check: I tried this on in store last week and fell in love, but at home I notice more details. (And read details from "sartorial choices" on IG.) some don't bother me so much, like the white stitching instead of olive, but it does stand out a bit. For sure the lining in thinner than my other Jcrew coats. For me the size feels different than in store, and the flap pockets are too high for me to use. There are small side pockets but they are not deep enough for my hands. Granted, I wouldn't expect to wear this coat walking long distances or being outside for long periods of time. I think I'd still need to size up or get a tall for the length. The shape doesn't bother me, it's not very a-line on me, maybe because my shoulders are sort of broad so it balances out—it just feels pretty straight to me. I'll keep checking for popbacks in tall. I much prefer my coats a little looser so no matter what I'd size up or get a tall.

Lena leather pumps with patent cap toe: my regular Gemma size squishes my toes a bit, 1/2 size up my heel is slipping a little but they feel more comfortable. I think for a shoe like this I'm better off sizing up and putting a heel pad in place. They're a splurge for me and I know there are a few other heels this season I love that might be more comfortable, but the cap toe is so classic.

    1. Hi! Just posted an update to my review as well, as I got to try on regular sizing in the Oxford check coat. Insta @sartorialchoices

  3. Maybe this has been mentioned before, but can anyone explain to me how to tie the "half bow" thing J Crew does on the tie-waist skirt? Their instructions make no sense to me:
"How to do it? Instead of making a second bunny ear, you just keep pulling the fabric through.)"
I keep looking online for better instructions (a you tube tutorial would be great! ha), I have a few things I'd like to try and tie this way but can't figure it out. Maybe I need better priorities. :D

    1. Also, if anyone has that tie-waist skirt (f7330), is the tie belt removable?

    2. ok, well I did just find this:

and that actually made more sense to me!

    3. It's hard to describe, but I've accidentally been doing it with my robe. I think you kind of just make one loop, kind of like the first two steps of tying a bow.

    4. That one loop Sash bow on the chair looks pretty sad and droopy, but with the stiffer fabric it's fine! That's a good demo.

    5. It's funny because I've been able to do it recently but I have a hard time picturing it or describing it. It's like I tie a bow but pull one side out as soon as the second loop is made.

  4. Hi. I would appreciate some advice. I bought the single-button jacket in windowpane tweed on popback. Maybe it's the colder weather, but I am having problems figuring out how I would wear it when the weather warms up. Yes, it's white and navy so it should work with a bunch of things, but lots of combos seem just "meh". Maybe it's the cropped length that's putting me off - about 4 or 5 inches shorter than most blazers? Maybe the jacket is just "meh"? I can't say I love it with all my heart but it did seem in theory to be a useful piece

I do have the matching dress (with the ill considered side zipper and small head opening design) but I'm thinking it might be a bit too much for me to pair the two. I do not have the matching skirt or pants. It was a great deal so the bargain hunter in me wants to keep it but my closet is cluttered with great deals that I don't wear...

Any tips on possible pairings? What kinds/styles of skirts do you think I should pair this with? Any thoughts (pro or anti) on cropped blazers?

    Thank you for your time.

    1. I'm not 100% sure which blazer this is, but I'll just give a suggestion based on the cropped jackets i have.

I like playing with proportions with cropped stuff... Like high waisted, wide legged pants and jeans. Or if the cropped jacket also has bracelet sleeves, I like pairing long sleeve, longer length shirts with it (but I'll usually wear skinny jeans with that).

    2. Oh... And I like fuller skirts if you don't have the matching pencil skirt for a "suit"

    3. I have the matching pants. I almost got the jacket - might have to see if my size is still available now. I think it would be super cute with a tissue turtleneck in navy with kaki martie pants or a bright tissue turtleneck and navy pants - the navy wide-leg ponte would or other wide leg would be cute.
