"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I called to inquire about an order that was taking an extraordinarily long time to arrive, and after being put on hold for quite some time was only told it was on its way. I asked what the problem was, and the customer service rep finally admitted there was a problem with the customs form (I live in Canada) so it was returned and had to be resent. I was in hurry for the item, and am rather pissed off at the unexpected wait, and when asked what they were prepared to do about it got nothing but silence for a few moments, then they finally agreed to reimburse me the shipping costs. I'm disappointed they weren't more upfront, and more accomodating especially after they found out I was in a hurry for the item (and they could see from my acount that I am a VERY good customer). This is not a customer first approach. And in my experience unfortunately bad calls like this are becoming the norm. I have still not received any email/correspondence about a scarf I ordered several months ago that is now apparently out of stock (shouldn't they tell me if the order was cancelled?), and I too got more than one email about a sale item being unavailable after I placed my order online. I won't even begin to talk quality (my jackie unravelled up one arm seam the first time I wore it, and the second arm on the second wearing). J Crew if you are reading this, I expect so much more.

  2. I recently ordered the seersucker blazer and seersucker skirt. I could not see the seersucker blazer very well. I ordered both online. Both items had the same color listed so I assumed that they would match. They didn't and I am so disappointed in J. Crew. The seersucker on the blazer was much smaller than the seersucker on the skirt. The blazer is also very poorly made and not lined - for a $168 - I don't think so. I will be returning it. Its comparable to one I bought at Old Navy five years ago for $30. I wish J. Crew would have online reviews. The only reason I can think of that they don't is because they are afraid their sales would decline. thanks for letting me vent!

    1. Seersucker is not supposed to be lined. The whole point of seersucker is for it to be breathable especially in humid conditions. It you get it wet it drys quickly. I have the same blazer and love it.

    2. It is disapointing that they don't match. I have the skirt and recently ordered the blazer (it has not arrived yet). I fully expected them to match.

As an aside, I wore my Loxley buckle sandals for the 2nd time last weekend (old item, but purchased as a popback in winter, so I've only worn them once on vacation). The leather tab holding the end of one of the straps broke. So, one of the strap ends just kind of hangs off the shoe. Annoying.

    3. I think all blazers should be lined - I like both my seersucker and linen blazers lined. BR has a great lined seersucker blazer right now $130, I got it for about $95 with a promo recently. Won't match your skirt but if you are still looking for a seersucker blazer it's worth a try.

  3. My vent:

I am a Perfect Shirt junkie. I must have 50. I am usually lazy and bring them to the dry cleaner because I hate to iron, but for some reason yesterday I was feeling "domestic" and decided to wash a bunch myself. I hauled out the Woolite and put several J. Crew Perfect Shirts through the delicate cycle WITH a few similar LE Canvas shirts I've acquired lately. Similar fiber content.

I was really shocked at how the shirts emerged from the delicate cycle. The LE Canvas shirts were "perfect" ... maintained their shape, crisp-looking collars and plackets. The J. Crew Perfect Shirts, however, were kind of a mess. They were extremely wrinkled, and the facings on the collars, plackets, and cuffs were distorted, out of shape, and inside-out.

    Really disappointing.

    1. I've purchased some LE Canvas items in the past year and I really love the quality.

    2. May I ask how the fit is on the LE Canvas shirts? I take a 4 in J.Crew's button downs. Thinking of trying a couple of the LEC shirts that are on sale.

    3. Meg I take a 4 in both J Crew Perfect Shirts and LE Canvas.

  4. Always been a huge Land's End fan since high school. Their shirts lately are even more fashionable and the quality is still there. Great to hear your report on the comparison of the JCrew and LE shirts.

  5. Sorry totally off topic but OMG. I just realized someone posted under Firefighter Wife. Hitting a bit to close to home as my parents had a large garage fire last night. (they are fine)

    1. I'm so sorry to hear about your parents' garage but I am glad that they are both okay. My husband is a firefighter and EMT. I'm very proud of him. I know I couldn't do his job.

  6. Broken in Chino shorts...adorable until you wear them for an couple of hours. They GROW! HUGE! I bought them the size I usually buy (4) and they fit in the legs, but the rear and waist were bigger to start (which I thought was part of the boyfriend look). They got so big, I looked like a homeless person.
I called JCrew and they told me that unless they were defective, I was stuck with them (of course, very nicely!). So, I returned the second pair I bought and ordered my usual 7" chino. Boo! Still the best shorts around ( I must have 10 pairs from the last 10 years or so) but even with the vanity sizing, I cannot believe I would EVER wear a 2.

  7. I just got a dress off of ebay... brown cotton lawn with a high waist, pintucking down the front and back top and a a-line knee length skirt, zipper on side, globe buttons down front top. Fits perfectly and I was wondering what it was/how old and was coming here to JCA to ask when within five minutes of trying it on my 2yr old popped one of the buttons clear off 7 was going for a second! very dissapointed... in a certain little man.

    1. Marisa, if there is a tag on the side seam of the skirt portion it may have a code that will tell you how old it is at least. It could read SU07 = Summer 2007 or HO08 = Holiday 2008. I have no idea on the dress name though.

  8. After months of waiting, the feather paisley bikini FINALLY went on sale online today ... peeved once again that shipping and tax added almost $20 to my total. Damn that shipping fee!

  9. xoxo, i know you were just giving a random example, but it IS from SU07! I feel like i remember that strawberry blonde model wearing it. It has bra strap holders, nice lining... love it.

  10. I have ordered some superfine cotton suiting for great prices last week. I am very happy with my purchases but here is my rant. I have ordered two sizes of pants and I noticed the first pair I tried looked a little different from my favorite 1035 superfine gray cotton trousers from last year. Then I got out the other size and sure enough they were exactly the same as my gray pair, wide waistband double belt loops and vertical banded pockets that stay flat as opposed to single loops, narrower waistband and slanted pockets that stick out. I checked the tag and no surprise, the pair I like is labeled SU11 and the other pair is labeled SP12. To me the design is not just different but it shows cost cutting and decline in quality even very recently. To me these were the details that made in like this style and what made it different from some other dress cotton trousers out there.

But maybe I am wrong, and people prefer single loops, slanted pockets and thinner waistband?
Fortunately for me there is almost no difference in dimensions(and both pairs fit me) even if they are 2 different sizes (4 & 6), so it looks like the sizing also changed. Of course I am keeping SU11 pair.

  11. Well, it finally happened to me...ordered an xs ashbury floral swim top and got a size 25 high waisted denim pencil skirt instead. Luckily I am close to a store, so no review council for me, but now my vacation is a week away and I don't have a top to match the bottoms. Fingers crossed it pops back in the next day or two. Otherwise I will return the bottoms on principle. Going to peruse saks.com, they are having a sale...getting harder and harder to justify any more jcrew purchases.

  13. A few little vents:

Ordered a necklace on final sale, instead I received a few misshapen tortoise headbands and a purple maxi skirt. I emailed CS to see how to go about proffering this exchange. I was told that the necklace was now sold out and that they appreciated my honesty, so I get to pay to mail the headbands and skirt back. Gee. Thanks.

My second vent is actually somewhere between a vent and a love. I received a "your order has shipped" email, and was really confused because I didn't think I had any open orders. Turns out that the double serge wool pencil in bright blue that I ordered in early NOVEMBER has shipped. We shall see what sort of condition this skirt is in, given that 6 months has gone by since I ordered it... But, if it is in one piece, then I am supremely happy (except that it is 90* outside now).

    1. That is just...wow. Talk about terrible customer service! They send you the wrong items and expect you to pay to send them back? No.

    2. I agree with Fai. Poor customer service....it's driving customers away!

    3. It was kind of crazy - I'm fortunate enough to have a store within a short driving distance, but was told that I could not return them to the store. I was also told that because the items were not part of the original order, they would not get processed properly if I used the return label that came with my original order. Ergo, I pay to return it. Not sure what all motivation I have to want to order online again in the future if this is what could come of it.

I will say though, my tiny little B&M has really stepped up their game. The selection is still dismal, but the staff has been greatly accommodating in other aspects.

  14. Mild vent...I ordered a St. James tee and got the crew cuts version. Definitely an easy fix, and much more understandable than some of the weird order mixups I've heard here. This will only become a serious vent if they try to refund me the $45 for the crewcuts shirt rather than the $85 for the adult version I bought.

  15. Did they Chang the sizing on cotton cafe capris? I received a pair in "natural" that are on promo, just to ck out the color. The pair I got are so tight. I compared them to my summer 2011 and they indeed are slimmer. What's that all about?

I also ordered 2 different colors in theNo. 2 pencil cotton skirt. Yup, one cot is visibly smaller than the other

    1. Pathos, just an idea, but are your previous pair of cafe capris the "classic cafe capri," and then the new pair the slimmer cut "cafe capri"? I know the classics are quite a bit more relaxed. That being said, I definitely wouldn't be surprised at extreme size inconsistencies!

  16. I've returned in store purchases by mail twice now and both times I've had to chase them up as never credited to my account. What a complete pain in the rear. And if I wasn't on top of this, they could have taken my return and never credited me what I was owed. Great customer service J.Crew. Here I sit on the phone with them atm fighting to get what I am rightly owed. Lucky I copied my rec and postal label so I have evidence.

  17. OK, I live in Australia, and was very happy when J Crew announced worldwide shipping to us (finally!), as well as FREE until May 30th. Well, FREE? I compared the prices of a few of my favourite items. Vintage Cotton V-neck Tee, $A42.10 compared to the usual US$29.50; Linen V-neck Cableknit Sweater, A$98.37, compared to US$69.50....the list goes on. All the more disconcerting that the A$ is now basically 1-for-1 with the US$, and has been stronger than the US$ in the last month. So why are we getting slammed? It should be cheaper for us, not more expensive. /end of rant.

  18. I am incredibly annoyed with J Crew shipping. This week will be the second time this year that an order was delivered late for an event I specifically shopped for. I placed my $700 order 8 days before my flight. If standard shipping is supposed to be 3 to 6 days, how is 8 days not enough lead time? Furthermore I absolutely despise the inherent dishonesty in sending an email stating my package has been shipped when the package was not sent to UPS until 3 days after the shipping email was sent.
