J.Crew & the Man who Dressed America {CNBC special}

Just a reminder that tonight CNBC (click here) is airing their show on "J.Crew and the Man who Dressed America" (10PM and again at 1AM). If you miss either showing, they will be replaying the episode on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at 10PM. They share:
With more than 300 stores, nearly $2 billion in sales and even the First Lady as a fan, J.Crew has transformed from a once-flailing, lackluster brand to a fashion force. Leading J.Crew is CEO Millard “Mickey” Drexler, known for his intuitive sense of what the public craves and his ability to lift troubled companies to new heights. Since taking over J.Crew in 2003, Drexler has successfully introduced designer quality clothing for the masses — driving the company’s revenues up 170 percent.

From New York to Italy, anchor David Faber explores the process of conceiving, creating and marketing a new line of clothing. How will J. Crew meet the twin challenges of expansion and a rapidly changing landscape in the Internet age of retail? CNBC takes you inside this growing retailer and explains what’s made the stylish, contemporary brand a success.
We have been hearing a lot about this news piece. (Refer to the "Mickey Explains How J.Crew Gets You {in your heart and your wallet!}", "CNBC Story about Mickey Drexler {another look on catalogs!}", "Meet The Mastermind Behind J.Crew" and "CNBC Story about Mickey Drexler {coming soon!}" posts for more info.) From all the sneak peeks & articles we have seen so far, I am pretty excited about checking this special out. It looks like we will get to see a lot of the inner workings at J.Crew.

Finally, CNBC and Gilt have teamed up to offer a $5,000 shopping spree to celebrate the premiere of this J.Crew special. To enter, click HERE.

Will you be checking out Mickey Drexler's story on CNBC? If the show has already aired, what are your thoughts on the episode? Did you think it did a good job of showcasing J.Crew?

  3. OT, but has anyone seen

    about J.Crew's recent Bali catalog?

    1. Oh boy, it's just a catalog shoot. It's not like the little boys are sporting pink toenails. ;)

    2. JustVisiting - no don't worry ... I had a similar reaction. I just had trouble bringing myself to care about the societal implications of a pretty innocuous-seeming J.Crew catalog shoot and thought it was interesting that it was that big a deal.

    3. Catalog shoots don't exist in a vacuum. Fashion has a history of taking young, thin, and white models (the beauty standard in the U.S.) to "exotic" locales and juxtaposing them against the "natives". It's a common trope and problematic considering the current lack of diversity in the fashion world (yes, J. Crew's catalogs are generally diverse but to a point) and history of race relations and class divisions in this country and around the world.

(Delete this if it's inappropriate Alexis, I just disagree with the notion that the Bali shoot isn't problematic).

  4. "designer quality clothing"?! How can they say that with a straight face?

    1. It's easy to say that when some of the top designers in the world have just "okay" quality themselves. Burberry quality is truly lacking from their bags to their clothing. I'm not impressed. Chanel's leather bags start to chip and peel after a year of light use themselves.

    2. And don't even get me started on Marc Jacobs. ...

    3. If you buy designer goods from the actual store there are no quality issues. Stay away from ebay or resellers unless you have deep knowledge of the products. Authentic Chanel bags don't chip and peel after a year of light use. Can't say I've ever had an issue with Burberry either.

  7. Congrats Alexis and other blogs shown on the special, so I guess putting in a vent, isn't just getting it off your chest. I loved the special to be honest and to hear Mickey mention, holey tee shirts and pilling cashmere they can't say they were not aware.

  8. I have to be honest, when Mickey mentioned the holey tees and the pilling cashmere, at one point he looked right at the camera -- freaked me out because it looked like he was talking to me in my living room!

    2. Oh, I HAVE to see that! Hopefully it will be on Netflix soon.

Congratulations on the blog shout-out, Alexis! How cool :)

  9. They mentioned that there was a store near NYC that gets the latest fashions first, before any other store. Do you know which one that is?

  10. Does anyone know if they're going to rerun this episode or where else we can watch it? Thanks.
