JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi all,

I am thinking of getting the morse code jacquard schoolboy. The colours say navy and ivory. Besides Jeans and something navy or ivory, any ideas on how else this might get styled? Might help me decide to pull the trigger! I am also eying the valentinas in the heritage green that Ema so beautifully styled in her blog. I do not have a lot of turquoise in my wardrobe - other ideas of colours I might wear with it? Thanks!

  2. WMM: You could wear the Morse Code schoolboy with numerous colors: red, kelly green, yellow, orange, bright pink, and black would all work well. For example: The way they have it styled on the model, but worn with a skirt or pants in any of the colors above would work. You could also pair it with jeans and then wear a top in any of the above colors under the jacket.

  3. Thanks FFM! have you seen the blazer in person? I am always nervous when something I like drops by 50% within 2 months, although maybe I should not be with the way Jcrew is going these days!

  4. There's a few new arrivals online (mostly dresses), unless I missed them from the last rollout. A lot of the items that were in-store only are now online, like the striped maxi that Ema and Gigi tried on, as well as that bright blue maxi skirt and striped Amie maxi. I also see the paisley pencil skirt and dotted dress ajc posted a few weeks ago.

    1. The polka dot dress is called 'Big-shot dress.'

      Hilarious name, and review here.

  5. WMM: I haven't seen the jacket IRL unfortunately. Perhaps another JCA that has seen it will chime in.

I don't know if you prefer that a jacket has lining or not, but the website description doesn't say that it is lined. I would try to find that out from CS if possible.

  6. hi. the morse code jacket is lined. i've seen it in person, and it is very nice. good weight fabric, and it is a true schoolboy fit. it is the same as the morse code cafe capris, so if your store has those, you can see the fabric and color in person. the color is navy and a soft white.

  7. @ Jackie: Funny, but I like the little New Arrivals rollout more than I did the big rollout from a few weeks ago! When ajc reviewed that navy Villa dress on her blog, I said, "I'd like to see it in red." Aaaaaand now it's online in red. Well played, Mickey. *Tips imaginary cap, opens wallet*

Oh, and I want that No.2 Feather Paisley skirt, but it doesn't say in the description that it's "Fully lined". Bogus. No lining = wait for sale price.

    1. MB, I have tried one of them in this post at the bottom. I am sure you can find cheaper alternatives out there.

    2. I have two Nolita denim jackets and once I got them, I gave away all my other denim jackets. I absolutely love the lighter weight of the Nolita denim, it's not nearly as stiff as some denim jackets can be. If you can hold out for a sale price or a FP % off promo, think about trying one. I love, love love mine! (This is probably not helpful...)

    3. Thanks ladies the hunt is on and I think I will at least try the Nolita denim on, can't hurt and Elaine you are the second person to say that the fabric is very soft. Worth a try on :)

  9. Whitney, but I just realized I tried this dress with front in the back!!! I am an idiot.

Anyway, if anyone cares to see my messed up review of Villa dress it is HERE, it also includes a new maxi dress (not online yet) and links and pictures of Attache in linen and Big-shot dot dress.

  10. I also posted link to No. 2 pencil skirt in feather paisley and I will have Ultra eyelet shell and Back-zip long-sleeve pullover reviews tomorrow.

  11. @ ajc: That's too funny! Also, I just realized that the navy dress that you reviewed on your blog and the solid Villa dress that appeared today are not the same dress - different fabric content, different prices, and the Villa is shorter than the one you reviewed. They look awfully alike...SO CONFUSED.

You said in your review that the Feather Paisley pencil is lined, right? I get so wary of those kinds of omissions in the verbiage on the website - when J.Crew's garments are lined, they usually like to point that out. The cotton pencils wrinkle something fierce when there is no lining.

    1. yes, Feather Paisley is lined. I think I included picture of a tag. Also, simplydreaming pointed out to me that the description on the Villa dress says 'buttoned back' but the model is wearing the buttons in front. They got me scared here, I thought I just coudn't tell the front from the back, lol.

  12. I might be in crazy pants town, but I kind of like the abstract leopard capris. I'm going to hold off on getting them because they just might make it to sale at some point, but I'm curious as to how you guys might style them.

    1. I liked that print in a skirt. I tried the pants on but didn't like them on me. I will have a photo of them later this week. I am guessing any of the colour on the bottom would go well in a top. I would see myself wearing them with a black denim jacket and plain white tee.

    2. I liked them too, just waiting for a price drop. Don't want to pay alot for a trend, kwim? But I must say I thought the fabric was super comfy feeling and the pants were flattering even though I never dreamt they would be because of the puckering in the fabric. Definitely have to keep w/neutral solid colors for the top. Black looked really cute w/it.

I saw the denim jacket (light blue) at the B&M, the material is very soft and looked very nice with the bennett chino when I tried it on. I take a xsmall or small in tops with JCrew and the small was a good size for me. HTH.

  14. Thank you so much Tochi! I think I will have to bite on that jacket now! Still waffling over valentinas!

    1. That jacket would go really nicely with that new denim skirt in citron, or a white one. Then the obvious green that they used in the purse, and almost all the new cafe capris. HTH

  15. Hi all,

Any suggestions as to what would be a nice colour match with the telegraph pencil skirt in royal violet? I like the colour but find I'm struggling a little to pair it. I tried my bronzed olive jackie, which I thought would be so cute, but I didn't like it for some reason.

How about a cardi in heather jungle (kind of a dark green)? And would turquoise bubble necklace with it be a bright trend FAIL? Or spearmint cardi maybe?

Maybe I just need to hit the ol' p-vore.

    1. I love the idea of turquoise with it. Go for it! other than that, i am totally not coming up with anything!

    2. How about that Irish moss colour from 2010? I am thinking it needs a warmer colour instead of the very dark green, so maybe a green with some yellow in it?

How about this sweater in my PV set"? Might work too.

I am not sure about turquoise necklace with it, but I guess it would depend on the entire outfit to decide.

    3. Thanks Rose and J.Crew JD! All good suggestions! I'm going to give them all a whirl and see how it goes...

Another colour that might work is navy??

  16. Off topic, but seeing as the "Looking to find" thread was a few days ago, I thought I would cross post here: have any JCAs seen the Wilma bead necklace (item 79979) at a Factory store?? If yes, could you let me know which one so I can call them and have them ship to my inlaws?

  17. OK ladies I can use some help with this one. I just purchased the Heart Throb silk blouse, FYI it's on sale for $89.99 in store if you can find one, but I think more stores have that blouse then we realize. So I was thinking of wearing it with navy minnie pants or dark denim jeans, and maybe white denim. Any other thought for skirts??? Thank you, oh I can see why you all like that blouse so very pretty, my first silk blouse!!!

  18. OT: If anyone has a Madewell 10% off coupon that you're not going to use, I'd love to take it off of your hands! I can give you a sheet of Banana Republic 40% off coupons for Wednesdays in April in exchange.

    Thanks!!

  21. @wellfedfred, I found mine in Westport, CT but it was the last one, I would try calling the JC in the Westchester Mall in White Plain, NY or any of the NY stores, you might get lucky, I noticed that more sizes popped back up online.

    1. Hi WFF I started calling around the stores in CT and then I realized when they asked me for size, I had no idea what to say. Try calling the New Canaan, CT store they might have one, they don't have a 2 or a 4, not sure what size you need, smaller or larger you might luck out!! HTH
