JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I could use some help! I was given a very lightweight silver cardigan. The buttons are clear plastic. It's got 3/4 sleeves and it hits very high on my waist.

I'm a no-nonsense 'preppy', academic woman, with a boyish streak. There's nothing girly or frilly about me. My daily uniform consists of an oxford shirt, a sweater, wool trousers, and loafers (all of this in traditional colours, usually navy, burgundy or kelly green).

I'm red-headed, with hazel eyes, freckles, and my skin is ivory with a yellow tinge to it. I'm very tall and hourglass-shaped. Pastels and very muted colours look atrocious on me.

The cardigan looks like this, but hits a bit higher than on the model, and doesn't have any embellishments.

This cardigan is a beautiful piece, but I just don't know what to do with it...

thank you! Any help is much appreciated.

  2. E - Maybe you could wear the cardigan under a classic navy blazer to downplay its glitz factor?

  3. Maybe it's the Marzipan? I like the styling in the picture at the link. I also think cropped cardigans look really great over tailored dresses (or other dresses that aren't too poofy) as well as with high waisted skirts.

  5. Hi all, I would love some help with the rustic twill boy shirt. Does anyone have it? Or have any ideas what to do with it? I thought it would be a nice blouse for work, but the material is much more chambray-ish than I thought from the picture. Help! And thanks!

  6. P.S E. you sound like a knockout! Haha I know that's not helpful with what to do with the cardi though.

  7. Someone help me with my assorted suckered gingham shirts, please! I think I have them in every color *hides* .. and basically I have worn them with either tan, white or gray bermudas or jeans, and that's about it.

I wear them quite a bit in the spring/summer when I need to look a little more professional for work and/or I get tired of going sleeveless. I think I wear the blackberry, dusty shale, hydrangea and the lilac ones the most.

Is there anything else anyone can think of, keeping in mind that it's usually 95+ degrees here daily for the next 4 months, so layering is out of the question...?

    *hopes*

  8. Hi -- i have both the cherry blossom and florentine capris -- what to wear with them? They are so heavily patterned not sure what to wear on top -- other than plain white or black.

    thanks in advance!

  9. Conster, I have the Cherry Blossom capris and wear them with navy, pastel pink and mauve tops, the colors pick up on the flowers in the print. There is also a bit of orange and brown in the print so you could try those colors or muted versions like beige or coral. I have worn them with white graphic tees as well. I love these capris, so cute and fun.

  11. Conster, the cherry blossom you can wear with a solid top in pink, mauve, and even in that rust in the leaves, while the florentines with pinks (I see 2-3 shades), mauve, and even a light green (or yellow, not sure exactly because of my monitor).

  12. Elaine, I love those too! I have worn my lilac one with the lolli pants this spring and it looked great. If you don't have the lolli (or you don't want to wear wool in 95 degrees, understandingly) maybe you have something in a similar color (like the dahlia pencil skirt). I bet it would look smashing with those new gala shorts.
I also recently tried a gingham on gingham combination with the hydrangea one and the sonoma shorts which worked (surprisingly). But if you want a safer option I think the scout chinos in the light blue color would work with it, I think.

  13. Elaine - I get a little crazy with colors, to the point where some tell me I don't match but I think I look good so thats what matters, right? :) But that being said I have been wearing gingham with a bottom of a more saturated darker hue, so bright pink with red bottoms or light blue with a darker cobalt blue. My other idea has been wear the gingham with a bottom of similar saturation but just a few shades off. For example the Raglan T in Wave Crest with the light blue gingham shorts. I know this is all technical. I think about clothes way to much!!!!

  14. Most of the outfits in the J Crew catalog and on the web site don't match either, but they look great! Think about that Fall 2011 melon-colored coat with the purple brocade pants, I think most people wouldn't put those colors together but it's really very beautiful. I match too much, I'm usually very monochrome, and I want to get away from that.

  15. Hi all! I just purchased the seersucker pencil skirt and the whisper linen v-neck tee in light sage, and a vintage cotton tee in the darker orange color (smoldering brick). My PS also picked out a white tank with the summer weight cotten cardi in bold peri as another look. We didn't have time to accessorize with a belt or shoes that day.
I need help putting together this outfit! I want to look casually put together without looking like I tried to hard since I will be dressing this skirt down most of the time. Since I am so fair, I think the tops I purchased are not giving me the "pop" I need and appreciate any advice! Also, not sure if the orange as meant to be coordinated with that skirt, or just goes with my closet, but if you gals think it works, help me with a belt and shoes! Thanks!

  17. I noticed someone asked about the maritime side zip hoodie. I have this hoodie and it is even more gorgeous wearing it on the street than it seemed it would be when I stuck a pose in the dressing room. The side zips can be unzipped a little to show off a peek of a cute top underneath and the gold-tone hardwear is classy looking. The material has a nice weight to it and the front pouch is well constructed. You will not be unhappy with this purchase. I'v worn mine with an older pair of dark-wash denim crops (to try to pull in some older pants that are not recognizable as easily now they are not available in stores) that flair out slightly at the bottom with ballet flats. I get a compliment every time I wear it!
