JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. OT but there are new arrivals in the new arrivals section. ;) (gulp) $795 for a leather tee. Wow.

  2. Thanks for the heads up Closet Crisis! I really like the Katie Colorblock Cami and the Cecilia Dress, although the *Blood Orange* color in the model pic doesn't appear to even be available right now. Also, the Vineyard Pencil Skirt is online now for those who were interested in getting it.

  3. Can anyone comment on the quality of the Vintage Cotton tees this season? Are they still very thin and prone to developing holes?

  4. Hi casual-crew! I saw some in the store and thought they were as thin as they've been in the past. I don't own any though, so I can't speak to the hole-developing factor.

  5. Thanks silver_lining, I haven't ordered in awhile I think I will pass on the tees and get something else instead.

  6. Thanks Closet Crisis! I ordered the Le Soleil tweed mini and it looks like it is already almost sold out. Somethings are going to final sale first markdown within a couple weeks of release and other things, like the Liberty shirtdress, are selling out fast. Crazy inventory.

  7. Good morning ladies!

I need some JCA style advice- not for a particular item, but for an event. I have my engagement photos coming up and have no idea what to wear for them haha. We are going to be in southern florida (vacation, we're in the rainy north east now), so seasonally, I'm so confused!

I know you all have fantastic JCA taste- any favorites that you think will translate well on film? TIA!

  8. Devon, I think the photogs usually advise wearing a solid-colored top or dress, as opposed to something with a print/pattern. So that right there will eliminate a lot right off the bat. My advice would be to wear something you know you look great in, colorwise and stylewise. Something people have told you looks great on you.

About the only rule I followed for my engagement pics was a solid-color top and ooooof, they turned out terrible. I wore a shirt in a color I would never otherwise wear, and it just wasn't flattering. I was a pasty, doughy mess, urgh!

Really the only other thing I'd say is that you can't go wrong with something that's a classic style. So nothing too trendy.

    Learn from my mistakes....!

  9. Has anyone tried the Indee Dress? #34097 - wondering if its worth $70 and final sale.

  10. Thanks, Elaine! I have a few of the dressy jersey dresses that I all but live in over the summer. I'm leaning towards the sundown in dark rosewood for the casual shots :)

  11. The sundown in dark rose wood is soooo romantic and pretty. Great pick :)

  12. Devon - ITA with Elaine, solids, not trendy, complementary color etc. I would also be aware of how the item(s) drape, wrinkle, shift, while wearing. One time I wore a silky top for photos and the lighting made certain shadows look like lumps! Just something to consider... You could always take a few test pics to help you decide. HTHs

  14. I just bought the Odeon High-Heel Oxfords (thanks again for your review, Chic Chauffeur) but I'm really not sure what I can wear with them and I have no catalogs to look through. Anyone have any ideas? I wear skirts and dresses almost exclusively. Do I need to do the color match thing? Would any color of tights look good? I usually do the monochromatic look so these shoes are throwing me off. :)

  16. I got an idea for the Odeon oxfords from the Spring 2011 line: this outfit which shows the mossy oak Collins but I think the mossy oak Odeons would work too. Any opinions? I don't do pencil skirts though, I prefer a-lines, gathers, or pleats because they're more comfortable to sit in. The Trenchlet and grey tee look cute.

  17. Hey guys! I'm shopping early for my graduation and I need 2 outfits. eek! I just bought the two-tone high-heel oxfords, so I'd like to give those a whirl on in at least one of my graduation outfits. I'm thinking the Cecilia dress in either Orange or Black, with either the Jackie cardigan, the Chambray Schoolboy Blazer, or the Cropped Silk Blazer. Any suggestions on what color combo for these items?

And any suggestions for a second very conservative and professional outfit for my graduation/awards dinner?

    Thanks!

  19. Brandon + Allie, here are some looks that IMO would work with your Langford oxfords (depending on the color of the garments that is):

    - wide-legged trousers and relaxed shirt
    - narrow trousers and cardigan
    - nerd-girl dress (glasses are de rigueur!)
    - business-y skirt and shirt
    - cute full skirt (maybe not so short!) and tucked-in shirt

IMO whatever you put on top of the Cecilia dress needs to be cropped, due to the full skirt. So the cropped jacket would be nice, but instead of the Jackie cardigan maybe the Jenna?

  20. Hey Brandon + Allie, you might want to consider this jacket from Loft to go with your Cecilia dress. Not sure how their metallic cotton is, but I have several "steel satin" items from Eileen Fisher and the fabric is to die for! It feels like thick silk even though it's cotton with metal fibers.

  21. Hi everyone! I bought the minette evening dress from the sale.

    http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/dresses/eveningdinner/PRDOVR~33678/33678.jsp

How do you think I should wear it? I'm thinking either black tights or no tights with either nude heels or patent black strappy heels with some kind of a bright colored clutch. Maybe a belt?

    ReplyDelete
  22. That Minette dress is so cute!

Here are some interesting (I think) pictures:

    Nude ankle straps
    pink platforms with pink clutch
    a DIY shoe treatment?

I don't like the exact realization of that last picture, but I do love the overall bi-color effect and the flower, and for that one black tights look right.

  23. HELP! I bought these shorts 2 summers ago and LOVE them, but can never find a top I like to go with them. Therefore, I've hardly worn them. Any ideas for the Horizon Stripe Short. Thanks!

  24. Thanks for all of you who helped with with suggestions. My JC got the Cecilia dress in today, and I hate it on me. It's so poofy at the bottom, it makes me look very pear shaped, which I am not. I also wasn't crazy about the cut of the top. I think I'm gonna go with the old pencil skirt and cardi combo. :)

  25. Sally: I would suggest a bright solid colored crewneck tee, button-down shirt, or a bright solid colored polo to wear with the shorts. Orange, yellow, bright pink, red, or kelly green would all work well. J.Crew doesn't have much in the way of polos right now, but Ralph Lauren has a bunch of them on sale: Classic-Fit Polo.

Another option is to wear the J.Crew Contrast-stitch Perfect shirt with the shorts if you have it. If not, numerous JCAs have recommended the J.Crew Factory End-on-End Camp Shirt as a decent alternative.
