J.Crew News: What's Happening Today? {Tuesday edition}

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am on vacation! Unfortunately, I won't be able to keep up with all the latest J.Crew news, promos, and the like.

So this post is the "catch all" for J.Crew Aficionadas and Aficionados to share with one another the "current happenings" for today. Feel free to post your comments here- from current J.Crew promotions, sales, emails, and even questions on products (regarding fit & size), and the like. :)

What comments do you want to share or ask of other Aficionadas and Aficionados? What is currently happening (in terms of promos, sales, emails, products, and the like)?

  1. Just curious - anyone know about this image? The styling seems too classic for recent crew but the jeans are awfully skinny for 07 or earlier

  2. *puts on JC historian hat*

I'm going to say it's Fall/Holiday 2006, the year I really started shopping JC. I own the tartan headband, the turtleneck is the Wellesley cable, which I think is the predecessor to the Cambridge, and although I'm not certain of the jeans, the oldest catalog I own (January 07) has matchsticks in them so if this image is from late 2006 these could also be matchsticks. Plus, the barnboard - definitely a pre-2008 JC background! ;)

  3. Quite a few new markdowns scattered around the site - merino strata cardigan, metallic gauze pencil skirt, Sunnie pencil skirt (if you're a 0)...

Oh, and check your accounts for free shipping - I got free monogramming, free gift boxing. Probably a way for them to get around adding FS to the promo across the board.

  4. Interesting article regarding Mickey possibly taking JCrew private...it might be the first sign that Dear Leader is ready to make some changes....

  5. JA, thanks for sharing (and thanks to WFF for sharing a similar link)! Fascinating stuff.

  6. Holy Cow! I got free monogramming, free gift boxing and free shipping! This is a FIRST! I've never got anything... not anything in the mail, no little coupon in a catalog, nothing - I am so happy about this!

  8. Oh my, I have the free ship too! I would never have looked but for this post.

  9. I got free gift boxing. What a joke. My online PS is so great she gives that to me all the time anyway!

  10. The Talbots sale with the 25% off store wide is fabulous. Many items on second markdown and the extra % off. I had such a good time shopping there last night. Felt like old JCrew times. I was in the store for an hour and came out with 5 great pieces all marked down to begin with. I did look at the new holiday arrivals and will be watching for additional markdowns on several items. I am such a bargain basement shopper;)

  11. If anyone GOT free shipping and isn't planning on using theirs, I would love it (laurasfraser @ gmail . com). Desperately want a new coat but this whole Canada thing is getting in my way.

  12. WOW I had the Merino Strata in my cart at $59.99 and when I was ready to check out it was back to FP. WTH???

Just free gift boxing for me.

    So frustrating.

  13. Free gift boxing for me. Wahoo....

  14. How do I check for free offers in my account?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Was excited to see that I got Free Shipping, Monogramming & Gift boxing:)

    ReplyDelete
  16. How do you check your account? I have never gotten any of these promos. Does it appear on top after you sign in?
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Grr...free gift boxing for me, too. It's just as well! I don't need the incentive to shop right now :) Hooray for all of you who received free shipping!

    ReplyDelete
  18. A: Sign in to your account. On the "welcome" page, there will be a message saying if you got any of the promos. It will say, "today, please enjoy free ____."

    ReplyDelete
  19. AppGal - thanks! That's what I thought. Never got any offers! I am special:). Even after talking to a ps and cs I still don't get catalogs.
    Enjoy the offer ladies:)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I got nothing on my account, not even free gift boxing (whatever that is).

    ReplyDelete
  21. A: don't feel bad...you're not alone! I just started receiving catalogs myself, after about 3 years of emailing, calling, and stalking CS asking to be put on the mailing list. What's funny is that my husband (who never shops JC) started getting catalogs a while back for no apparent reason. Maybe you should sign up with a pseudonym :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't feel bad at all! I just find it amusing. My husband who never shops there on his own received catalogs for a while. It was a running joke between us that out of respect for our bank account jcrew avoided me and sent the catalogs to him.
He must have fallen out of their good graces bc he doesn't receive them anymore either.

    ReplyDelete
  23. As usual, a big fat zero for me. Fark you too, J Crew. Stick your random offers where the sun don't shine. :/

    ReplyDelete
  24. When is the last time Mrs. Obama was seen wearing J.Crew? Doesn't seem like there's been a splash of note since the Vogue cover, which was March 2009....

    ReplyDelete
  25. I received Free Shipping, Free Monogramming & Free Gift Boxing through 12/25, as well. Thank you, JCrew, I really appreciate this! :-)

  26. Just free boxing for me but I don't plan to buy any gift and the only two items I am interested in are store only.

  30. I just received the email alerting me to the "free gift boxing" on my account.

They've also formally announced "TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners to Acquire J.Crew Group, Inc. for $43.50 Per Share in Cash".

  31. Summerilla,

Not that it is any of your business but I do not work for Talbots. They just remind me of the JCrew I used to know and love. It is so exciting for me! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

PS. From now on I would appreciate you just skipping over my posts. We will both be happier for it:)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Barbabelle,

I have posted that same thought a few times in the past month as well! Glad to see you are not the only one missing the absence of JCRew on Mrs. Obama.

I saw her in a Talbots sweater last week:) Hee hee. She has gotten the message--

    ReplyDelete
  33. Elaine,

You definitely deserve all 3 freebies on your JCrew account! Wish you had gotten it!

It looks like this is the only free offer on accounts to between now and Christmas by Summerillas post of the ending date on her account. That really sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Desert Flower,

Love your post on Fabulous Florida Mommy's blog today about how "Talbots is like the JCrew of Old". That is EXACTLY how I feel! You made my day confirming my recent experience with Talbots.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Genny - Get a life and a Talbot's blog. I agree it does come across as Talbot's marketing when you are constantly touting it in a blog about JCrew.

In other news, I got the free monogramming but not free gift boxing or shipping. Odd.

  37. I got free gift boxing and monogramming. Nice thought, but I won't buy without free ship. I'm hoping they will add free ship to the general promo they have on the site for t-giving/black friday.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Genny's 4 in a row posts after getting called out is kind of a red flag giveaway...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Alexis is gone and this starts up again . . .

In other news, nothing for me on my account. In the past I've received the monogramming/boxing but nada for me this time. Guess I shouldn't be that surprised given my drop in purchases and that I haven't taken advantage of the recent offers . . . but I'd just like to buy a couple of little things and no-minimum FS is what I need to pull the trigger.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In response to the LBO articles, I'm really curious to see what they do to "fix" the business out of the public eye. I wonder if they have some brilliant ideas they don't want competitors to catch on to.

  42. OT but the jaspe sequin sweatshirt is back hiding in sale!!!! Both colors all sizes ! I know many don't love the sequins but I was just doing my daily browsing of the site and found it and I was shocked! I don't look under the tees and knits that much so maybe that is why?

Anywho it's hiding in there and it totally made my day (lame I know:) ) I just ordered it... HTH someone :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. P.S. I just received an email from JC saying "It's Great to be a Cardmember."

If it's so great why can't you give me the free shipping, boxing, and monogramming that the other JCAs are receiving? I give up, LOL.

Cass, ITA--I wonder what they are up to? Is this about more creative control? (As if they don't have enough?)

  44. Got nothing in my account, but... was in the store on Sunday, eyeing the Wool-Cashmere Capella coat. An SA walked up and informed me that all outwear (FP) was 30% off.

So I was intrigued - especially as the Capella coat was on promo for $248 online. I asked, and they said they would honor the online price, plus the outerwear promo. Then the SA asked if I was a student, because they could combine the promo (b/c it's not a sale) with my student discount.

So I left the store with the camel Capella coat, matched at $248, then with another 30% off, and another 15% on top of that - it went from FP ($298) at the B&M to $147.

Definitely ask your SA/PS whats going on promo-wise, and if it's a promo not a sale, make sure you use your student discount!

Seems like they're making an effort to be more customer friendly lately.

  45. Ffm I got an xs- I have three other jaspe sweatshirts and they were all xs. I don't know why I am so obsessed hopefully it lives up to these high expectations! I got the white sequined grey jaspe!

Are you ordering? I heard this one runs a little big/ slouchy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. jcrewlove: All that's left is the size small, so I'm thinking it will be too big for me. Congrats on grabbing an XSmall. Did they have it in XSmall in both colors when you discovered it?

    ReplyDelete
  47. FFM seriously?? That is crazy! Yes! All sizes both colors!!!

If fir some reason I don't end up loving it I will email you first if you are interested in it!

I can't believe how quick they went! I'm not kidding five minutes ago they had both colors all sizes!

    Oh please ship!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. PS sorry everyone for all my posts and all my ! :) I am just a bit excited over here.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Leave Genny alone...I talk about Talbots on here too; it's a free country and it's not your blog. Talbots is reminding people like Genny and I about what we miss about J Crew. I love how all the insults start flying when Alexis is out of town. People who are obssessed with J Crew enough to blog about it shouldn't tell other people to "get a life".

    ReplyDelete
  50. Summerilla,

Why do you post negative and nasty things and personally attack people (and come on this blog) ONLY WHEN ALEXIS is away??? You did this last time as well.

Please if you aren't going to be helpful stay away and don't come around when you feel you can get away with things.

I have made several helpful posts and tips and received THANKS from many on this blog about JCREW related news.

  52. jcrewlove -

That is awesome, fingers crossed it ships! The Jaspe is still my all time favorite of the sequin sweatshirts. That is a great sale price too!

  54. Emily,

Thank you very much. I hope you have a wonderful day and a great holiday on Thursday:)

Really a HUGE JCrew fan b/c of their clothing over the years. Just now seeing Talbots do the same and getting excited b/c I miss JCrew's classic look.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you Summerilla! I will post if I get it! Even if it says shipped I feel like I won't beleive it until I actually have it :)

  56. Christy,

I don't feel "called out" at all. I am very happy responding directly to a few people this morning. I usually do that if you follow this blog on a regualr basis:)

  57. The minute we trade tips about promos, discounts, free shipping, coupon codes -- we're comparison shopping.

The minute we discuss which items are TTS and which are not -- we're comparison shopping.

The minute we discuss which items wear well and which, er, pill -- we're comparison shopping.

So it's probably ok in a competitive mercantile economy to note that other merchants exist and offer items of similar character at other price points, and other promos; and give other perks. That too is a form of comparison shopping.

Speaking of which, there is a lovely promotion going on at ralphlauren.com, many of the sale items reduced an additional 25% and free shipping sitewide, no code, no minimum spend. Class act.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am also surprised by the buyout. Maybe they do want to grow the company without the pressure of meeting monthly targets and dealing with public scrutiny.

I do wonder, however, will Mickey and Jenna's profiles go down a bit because they won't really need to share information. I'm a business reporter who has covered bought-out companies and the flow of information slows.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh my! Alexis is gone and Summerilla is back attacking. She attacked me last time.

I was at JCrew last night. Fun to look around and get in the holiday spirit. I did not buy anything but had a nice chat with a PS:)

  61. Fabulous Florida Mommy - Yes mine is an XS. We are similar in size so I would say you'd need the XS as well. The XS fits me loose too, but I have narrow shoulders. Hope that helps!

JCrewlove - popbacks are the best but I'm the same way until it's in my hands I don't believe it. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  62. jcrewlove thanks for the post about the Jaspe!! Minutes later there were only S & L sizes. I have a S in the Haya, and ordered a S in the Jaspe...hope it fits!

    thanks for the heads up!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Lauren- I can't believe how fast they went! Am I crazy or did you see them with all sizes too? I haven't seen anything go that fast for awhile!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Summerilla...you aren't making sense or being fair. You are the one who started this...everyone just needs to scroll up to see that. You're being patronizing and rude. I don't think I'll be visiting this blog anymore. It's just bizarre to me that critiques of J Crew are often taken as personal insults. It's a clothing retailer.

    ReplyDelete
  65. jcrewlove...you must be crazy...there were only Small & Large in both colors...only kidding about the crazy part...crewzy maybe!!! (btw I ordered both color...hard to tell online and if they arrive they can be returned TG!!)

Like you, I hope to get them. Killed me to pay shipping but I bought a pair of boots w/ the discount too and some belts.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lauren- I swear they were there! I quick placed my order before posting though (I was worried someone when snag my xs before I got it!) :)

I hate shopping too it is my worst enemy!

    ReplyDelete
  67. jcrewlove -looks like they are all gone now.

fingers brossed we do not get the dreaded email.

I actually got an email AND a call about a belt no longer available last week.

  68. Himself just received an emailed Holiday Newsletter from JCrew telling him all about Holiday News! That is, mostly repeating excerpts from the catalog & website! He was not entranced, except for the last entry, which mentioned "code TURKEY". That made him wonder if one of his old fraternity brothers was up to his old tricks. Not impossible.

  70. Why can't we just relax and live with other people's viewpoints and comments? Lots of us mention other retailers on here. Recently I asked for opinions on a BR trench and got no less than 10 responses which were posted on a thread here. No one complained. Lots of us sell items other than J.Crew via the weekly exchange. I for one only own a few items from Talbots... and well let's be honest, from retailers OTHER than J.Crew but I like hearing about items from other stores from people like me who love J.Crew but recognize that sometimes other retailers may do certain items better etc.

Also, I did not get free shipping or anything. I am ok with it since I don't plan on ordering anything but it is lame how they seem to give these promos out randomly.

mommydearest, I have a pair of matchsticks from 2006, which is I THINK when they first came out. Funny, they seemed really different then, and now everyone wears skinny jeans! Silver lining is probably spot on with her estimate.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I don't mean to add fuel to the fire, but I would like to jump in and say I am really tired of hearing about talbots as well - it's the main reason I DO NOT comment and read this blog as much as I used to.

talk about missing the old j. crew - I miss the old jca blog!

to continue - I don't think summerilla mentioned this just because "alexis is out of town." It's because we hear about Talbots each and every day, and it's exhausting. please please please take it somewhere else. Gigi has plenty of posts about talbots on her blog - and it's more appropriate there because her blog IS about more than just j. crew.

    Bash away...

    ReplyDelete
  72. I got a 20% off any purchase card in my catalog yesterday! I never get promos!

...now onto logging into my account to see if I got free shipping *fingers crossed*

    ReplyDelete
  73. Someone please lay claim to talbotsaficionada.blogspot.com and start a new chapter in your wardrobe lives....we promise we won't jcrew that joint up!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Just to quote - "So this post is the 'catch all' for J.Crew Aficionadas and Aficionados to share with one another the 'current happenings' for today. Feel free to post your comments here- from current J.Crew promotions, sales, emails, and even questions on products (regarding fit & size), and the like. :)"

It does mention "the like" which some of you may argue includes non-J.Crew matters, but may I point out that it is a J.Crew-centric blog and the title of the post is "J.Crew News: What's happening today?".

A suggestion (ONLY a suggestion), maybe Genny and other Talbot-fans might be better served if Genny (or whoever) could email Alexis if they wanted a mention of a Talbots sale or other that's going on. Wasn't it what happened before? If there was a Gap/ON/BR sale, Alexis made a separate post - like an OT blogpost for our information. (This information may have started from emails sent to Alexis as well.)

I am aware that Alexis is on vacation and may not be able to entertain such emails, but again, it is just a suggestion.

I speak only on my behalf when I say that I, too, miss the J.Crew of yore AND the JCA blog of yore, but it's inevitable that things do change. There are those who miss the J.Crew and have gone on to love other retailers just as much. Kudos to you all and I'm sure J.Crew misses your "contributions". But which one is it that we have more control over? I'd like to say J.Crew, but we all know that's not true.

J.Crew will do whatever the hell J.Crew wants. We can voice our opinions on what we want and don't want (who gets promotions or not, what style gets sold and which ones they discard), but at the end of the day, J.Crew still has the final say.

This blog did start out as a JCA blog, and I don't think Alexis has changed the premise any from the very start. It's the blog's audience who have changed. For the many years that it's been handled by Alexis, there have been countless ladies and gentlemen who have come and gone, left comments or merely lurked on the blog. I love that we all have this blog to run to for the latest J.Crew news, but let's leave the negativity out of it.

I think Gigi's onto something - you know when she posts a comment and leaves a link to her blog for further review? Maybe Talbot's blog(s) links are in the future? :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Whew, that was long. :p

And just to clear things up, many have just held in what has been said; it's just bad timing (some will call it coincidence, I'm sure) that Alexis is away.

Again, sorry for the loooong comment. I just felt like it had to be said.

    ReplyDelete
  76. In other news (did someone already post this?)

Breaking News: J.Crew Sold for $3 billion!

J.Crew will be acquired by two investment firms for $3 billion, according to a document released moments ago by the preppy-chic retailer.
This will allow CEO Mickey Drexler and co. to fix what’s wrong with the business–and build on what’s right–without having to deal with public shareholders.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm posting once more, then I'm outta here. It's one thing to not like posts about other retailers, it's quite another to dish insults. That is what bothers me. Really, it's pathetic. Accusation and rude comments are not a mature way to handle any situation, let alone something as trivial as blog posts.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I was surprised to receive an email this morning about getting free shipping, monogramming and gift wrapping on my account. I have NEVER received any perk of any sort from JC before. However, with the current promo of meeting the $150 threshold for the 25% discount is not attractive considering what other clothing retailers are offering this week.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Seriously people,

This is a blog about CLOTHING. It is just clothes! Personal attacks not welcome.

Drewablank, Sorry but I lost you..... I tried to go through your post twice. I can say this is no coincidence though.

I too am outta here for the rest of this week. Last post:) Cheers:)

I might mention other retail stores but I don't bash people like Summerilla. Plain. Simple. Clear.

  85. ON topic :P Noticed that the sales section has been updated a bit. I stalk the outerwear, shirts & tops and sweaters sections and there are now numerous additions. No, didn't get free ship/giftbox/monogramming on my account, but wouldn't have checked my account if it wasn't for you ladies on this blog. Thanks for all the good info :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oh, and on the topic of taking JC from public to private... I work for a privately held company that was "forced" to post some info publicly, and we're switching back to fully private next year. I can say that the reporting requirements have changed, and will change again. That's prob. a huge load off MD and JL's plates. Hopefully if they don't have to answer to stock holders every quarter, MD and JL can put some quality back into the merch. JCA historians can confirm/correct me, but there was a significant drop in quality when the company went public, no? So this may bring the company back in the right direction. "No more pilly sweaters" will hopefully be the new mantra muttered over the intercom phone syst.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I've always enjoyed reading comments about J. Crew - good and bad - and people's opinions about other retailers. This blog is owned by Alexis, and she is the only one who can dictate what we say or can't say. So, until she bans any negative comments about J.Crew or comments about another retailers, we're free to say what we want, just please do it respectfully.

    ReplyDelete
  88. on the other hand, the buyout apparently means that there will be a substantial debt to be serviced, and heavy investors to answer to. I think it's early to feel optimistic about fashion-related issues, at least not until the shop-around period is over and it's clear who the new owners will be and what the exact financial terms of the purchase are.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yeah, the deal won't close until the first quarter of 2011, so who knows. It will be interesting to watch!

Here's another article for those that are enjoying reading about it:

  90. Summerilla,

You personally bashed me last time Alexis was gone. You were definitely trying to start something again IMO from your past behavior being a guide.

I am a reading specialist who would be glad to help you learn to skim and skim and skim over certain posts. If you chose to read them, it is your own fault plain and simple.

    Genny,

I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to discuss anything with Summerilla in private. No way would I want contact with such a person outside of blog world!

I too will go along with Emily. No more posts for now. I want to enjoy my time off.

    ReplyDelete
  91. OK, now that everyone has sand in their eyes...let's move on. Take your differences offline. It's Thanksgiving. I'm thankful that J.Crew is potentially going private. Hopefully this will give them some quiet time and thoughtful insight on what kind of company they want to be.

    ReplyDelete
  92. "Taking the company private can address some of the same issues: discounting, styles, inventory management, and expansion that it tackled in the late ‘90s, without having to bend to the pressures of shareholders."

Thanks for the link, Silver Lining- perhaps they'll consider bringing in some conservative fresh blood!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I second what Hexicon said. I don't really know what the buyout means for the future of JC. Hopefully not doom.

    ReplyDelete
  94. From my MBA classes it seems that LBO firms are pretty hard core about shaking up management once they take over. While I would definitely think that slowing [women's] sales need to be addressed, this seems like a relatively drastic measure. JC is still doing relatively well compared to other retailers. It seems like probs could be addressed by refining the merchandise mix a bit more to have combinations of old and new JC (so still a differentiated product but not crazy OTT fashion that "real" people do not want to wear), with better quality control.

Btw Necessary Articles, thanks for letting us know about combining the student discount. Perhaps they are becoming more lax due to declining sales. I had stopped asking about combining them but I will start asking again.

  95. Cass- I would suggest always asking about combining discounts! You never know! Never hurts to ask.

  96. Cass - as far as I know, you can still combine the student discount with NON-order-wide discounts, so it's not a matter of J.Crew becoming lax. Because the discount was for outerwear only, and not the entire order, you can still use the student/teacher discount with it. I don't remember when they made this change, but I've never had a problem combining my student discount with non-order-wide discounts.

  98. Don't know if anyone heard this news yet, but J.Crew has been sold. I wonder what this means for the future of the company: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/j-crew-surges-on-reported-buyout-offer-2010-11-23?dist=countdown

  99. I went to the Rock Center store this afternoon and they had tons of the Lisette cami in black and herloim pink on sale (all sizes). Black had just been added to the sale section and it rings FP, but it is marked down for sure (to $59.99). HTH!

  105. sweetsy,

Why would you make up a lie like that?

I do plan to continue to post on this blog daily as my one and only true self and help out fellow JCA's with questions.

I could truly careless what other post or say about me or what lies they conjure up.

I enjoy JCrew and you or others won't spoil that for me ever. I have support from others on this blog so am going to let all this just roll off my back.

Have a good night and do take care:)
