Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SUMMER & FALL sale, or to see some new FALL arrivals {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. Just received the Trudie Herringbone Coat in the mail today. The fabric and color is stunning, but the sizing is off.

Just a comment that it runs extremely big, so I would recommend sizing down two sizes smaller than your usual.

I often wear a 4 in J.Crew jackets. My PS told me to order a 2. I have to return it and order a 0.

  2. Looks like the Factory section has some decent replicas of goodies from past seasons...I see a Belle skirt, black Stardust pencil skirt and Del Pelato-style dresses right off the bat. If anyone is looking for the lace tiered cami, it's available, too. Returns are mail and Factory stores only; no time limit posted.

Side note: The new return policy is posted. 30 days for in-store purchases; 60 days for online and phone purchases.

  3. Maybe I'm being daft, but won't the addition of a Factory section (with items from past seasons) just further encourage us to wait to buy things in the hopes that, even post-"final" sale, they will end up on Factory!?

  4. Hmm that's weird, the site hasn't been working for me since sometime early this morning. Is anyone else experiencing this? I would love to check out their factory stuff too. Maybe they got sick of me, tracked my IP address and prevented me from visiting??? Lol.

  5. fixated - The items made for the factory store (J'Crewlet to us) and are not overstock from the regular stores. Not sure if you already knew that. The factory is usually about a full year behind, so not everyone will want to wait for the replicas. It's interesting that it's only open on the weekends, according to the website.

  6. Ashley Mac,

So jealous, that coat is beautiful and I must have it. Did you get the green or the Is it big all over or just big throughout the body? And are the sleeves too short on this one?

    Fixated:

    J. Crew factory is just replicas of J. Crew merchandise produced with different fabric content to save on cost. They used to carry retail merchandise but now they're kind of a separate brand. You can find out of season merchandise but it's pretty rare and it probably will be factory store only like it is now.

  7. SocSci, gigi, and nomoney: Thanks! I had no idea what the Factory section was. Oops.

  8. I have to say the quality of the items I have received from the factory stores has been great. Although I have never shopped from the online factory store...but for instance I just received the tiered lace cami, from the J. Crew Collection (extremely similar to the one from fall 2009) from a Crewlet and I have tho say the quality is OUTSTANDING. Similar delicate lace, same 4 tier design, covered buttons along the side seam as the previous $800 version, silk sash(although the sash is slightly different in terms of the detail along the edge of sash) and at $158 bucks it was a steal! Highly recommend it, although from what I have been told there are only 10 Crewlet stores that carry the J.Crew Crewlet Collection(which simply is the Crewlet version of the regular J. Crew Collection pieces). but thanks to the online outlet it is also available there...however the color I have is Natural, and the color on the website in Sandstone.
And as far as sizing for this piece I purchased a size 6, which for me if pretty TTS.
Hope this helps someone! Happy shopping!

  9. sure am visiting to return my bayberry flouncette, on sale less than 30 days after i bought it FP and haven't even worn it.... that seems like another fast markdown!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nomoneyfun, my Trudie coat also arrived today too. It does run big. There something off about the coat. I think it's the collar. I ordered a size 2. It's big all over, the sleeves were a little long on me. I wanted to love it. It didn't do anything for me.

I immediately returned it. And when I went in the store to make the return, the sa said that's how it's suppose to fit. IMO, I don't think it's worth $425.

  11. I'm so happy to see that the Factory site is up! My closest Crewlet is about a 35-40 minute drive (ok, that's not too bad... I'm just lazy) so I only get out there maybe once every 2 or 3 months. I'm surprised it's only open on weekends though. Does that just mean any orders placed during the week won't be processed until the weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  12. So if the Factory site is only open on weekends (how/why would they even do this, in terms of a business model), then why is it up already?? Or maybe it's as Jackie said and they only process on weekends.

I'm really glad for it to be up as I've been looking for an ivory scoopneck tee everywhere and all of the FP stores' versions are way too thin, as per their recent quality decline. However I went to the factory store a few weeks ago and found a wonderful one, the Textured Jersey Satin Trim Tee, that was really thick. Makes me wonder if the high quality is due to Factory being about a year behind the FS stores, and thus a year behind the quality decline? Lol.

  13. Oh yeah, and the J. Crew website is working now that I'm on a different computer. I'll check back using my regular computer to see if they really do hate me, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh wait, just realized the answer to my own question. Because it is already 12 AM Friday, EST time, that is!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm holding off on any bigger purchases until we see a 20% off private sale for cardholders (yeah, right, unh-hunh . . . ). But, because I was sucked in by the novelty of the factory site, I ordered the pumpkin paisley scarf. If I like the print I might get the Kelsey top in the same paisley. Even if the quality isn't up to the (lately, less than high) ordinary J.Crew standards, I can live with a moderate for items like those.

  16. can somebody comment on the rimini sweater?
i want to order the black one,but have never seen it IRL.
    is it worth the 59.99?
    TIA

    ReplyDelete
  17. So happy that the factory site is up! I've noticed that the factory sweaters that are replicas of the dream sweaters are extremely itchy and not dream fabric. Just FYI for those who haven't seen them IRL.

Also, the factory professor blazer fits TTS and it's gorgeous IRL.

    Happy shopping everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is encouraging - if they are able to have a section for Factory, then they should be able to have a Sale section for first markdowns and a FS section for end-of-season pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  19. the prices on factory still seem high to me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I did a quick post on my blog about the factory section with my thoughts and some of my faves, in case anyone is interested. Click here to read.

I like a lot of the items and am very interested to see how this works out for them!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I went to my local JC to check out the new arrivals and have to say that I saw a lot of things I would love to have. But I'll have to wait for them all to drop in price though. Love some of the new embellished tees.

As for the new Factory link on the website....I thought the point of going to a "Factory" store was to get great deals. Most items on the new site are even more expensive than the regular sale stuff from the regular J. Crew store!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd like to get to the b&m but probably won't be able to this weekend.

It's great they finally have outlet items available online. It's fun to see some older items brought back to life. I must say I'm even more hesitant to buy from this section than the regular store section. Where's the Crewcuts section? That's what I'd really like to see!

    ReplyDelete
  23. been awhile since i posted, but wondering when will final sale end?! i've had so many quality control/inventory control issues w/sale items in the past that i've entirely avoided final sale since it started! it's killing me--there have been some great pop-ups here and there but i just can't pull the trigger...is an end in sight? i can't seem to remember when final sale finally (no pun intended...sorta!) becomes a regular old fall sale??

but do like the online factory edition! i find the prices a bit high for factory but definitely great to pick up some 'coulda, shoulda' great replicas! i have the original lace tier cami and kicking myself now seeing the much lower price tag, yet very similar look of the factory one!

i agree w/IRL too--bring on some crewcuts factory wear!

  25. I think I will be going to the Southpark J.Crew in Charlotte this weekend. I have to take back some items that I bought a while back that just got marked down further. Looking forward to playing dress-up in the fitting rooms...and will post some reviews after I get back! :)

Silver_lining: ITA. So many other retailers (like LOFT, for example) have a "sale" section AND a "final sale" section. That works so much better, imo. Maybe that is in the works, too. Fingers crossed...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Holy outlet store! The Factory blushed tweed skirt is $99.50, on promo for $89.50! How is a Factory, lesser-quality material so expensive? I'm gobsmacked. The original was $158, and I ordered it during a sale & % off for something like $100. Guess which version I'd rather have for $10 more.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am not impressed with the prices on the factory pages. Factory del Pelato shift dress for only $10 less than retail? WTF? Ah well, I have stuff to do this morning, will look at more later. ... Thanks for the news!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Silver lining - agree on separate sections for sale and final sale. J.Crew is the only store I'm familiar with that goes directly from retail to final sale. Other places, like AT, it's the third or fourth markdown. Let's keep our fingers crossed j.crew wakes up and smells the profit$ :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Can anybody comment on factory cashmere? I guess it doesn't come from a famous secret mill in Piedmont but the site doesn't even specify the gauge. TIA!

  30. I went to my B&M to do some returns yesterday and saw:
Novo-stripe wrap top is now $39.99 (used to be $59.99)
Sweet Violet Cardigan $59.99 (or $69.99?)
    Dream Draped v-neck sweaters $49.99
    Jaspe henley shirts $39.99
Sequin pencil skirts $69.99 (but they wear stuck together and the zipper was hard to pull d/t sequins)
    Sequined jersey bloomer, $59.99
Crushed jacquard pencil skirt $69.99 (true to size, but itchy on the outside, rough texture)
Cord Atlee skirts in navy, dk brown, $34.99
Star dip ballet flats in gray, $69.99 (these fit weird, very low toe cleavage and could possibly go 1/2 size down).
Bunch of (yet again) embellished tees.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes I will be going...probably not buying (see below) but I will definitely politely register my concern about the new return policy.

Oh, and definitely agree with Zoelicious. The facotry Dream yarn isn't worth $20, IMO. Very cheap-feeling and looking and itchy to boot.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yeah, while I was there not one person (the manager rung me up) mentioned about this new return policy. It is so deceptive of them to be putting up the new policy on the day of the effective date.

@Ina: I have the Rimini in cobblestone and I'd like to get either the black or the forest color. However, I'm not sure about the merino since I already see it fuzzing along the front and sleeve (obviously shop worn) and I have yet to wear it. I have other merinos from the past and don't remember something getting so fuzzy this fast. I think if I get a darker color it is less likely to show. Oh yeah, the arms are really snug so stick to your regular size. HTH!

  33. Now that J'Crewlet items are available online, I'll be clarifying product information if I choose to purchase J Crew on Ebay. I do see some Ebay sellers specifying that their items are factory store. As a buyer, I will be emailing them to ask or request a photo of the tag which shows the 2 diamonds stitched on it if it's factory. The silk camis (silk posy, Kelsey), for example, are almost dead ringers for the original. It may not matter to some people, but I prefer to not pay more than regular J Crew retail for something that's made for the factory. There *is* a different in materials used.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I ran in for a quick return of my Silvana cardigan that I bought for FP and returned b/c I got it on the 20% off sweater sale. Anyway, the SA doing my return mentioned the new return policy. When I told her that this was going to affect the way I shop w/them, she got a bit defensive about it. She told me GAP has a 30 day return policy, so why shouldn't JCrew? She probably got defensive w/me b/c I've done my fair share of returns due to poor quality issues and she's probably sick of seeing me, lol!

  35. There is an interesting article about Mickey Drexel in the recent New Yorker. It is written as mostly personal profile, so you get a feel of what kind of person he is, and New Yorker always does it very well. But is also stresses the fact how Mickey is obsessed with profit margin and fascinated by designers who can sell $800 umbrellas. This sheds some light on some recent JC offering and pricing...
Overall, Mickey does come off as "the most insecure CEO", always feeling like a poor relation, always trying to prove something, even after he accumulated very significant wealth and business standing. There is a lot of other interesting tidbits in the article, curious if anybody else read that and what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  36. jcrewphd, do you mind posting what b&m you went to and if you noticed the sizes of the novo stripe wrap top? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Kris: Costa Mesa, CA
I think if you call this morning they may have a size you're looking for since they seem to have more than ten on the rack. I didn't see a 0 but saw, 2,4,6 and I don't remember the rest. HTH!
Btw, I took my smaller cami size since the bust area is rather roomy. However, the hip area is rather fitting. I will be wearing a black tank under since it's very low v-neck.

  38. Gigi, I agree, IME a LOT of eBay sellers list factory merchandise as retail--negligently, deliberately, who knows? I've never been to a Crewlet, so the website is the first time I've seen factory pieces listed as such, and it turns out that I recognize a lot of them from items I've seen offered on eBay. It's a good reminder for JCAs to use caution with eBay purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gigi: I agree...I had a horrible experience on ebay after buying what I thought was a retail item (had the retail picture from web and everything), but when I received the item, it was factory. The seller jumped all over me when I wanted to send it back. We'll have to be really careful to ask sellers to clarify now!

  40. NoMoneyFun-

I purchased the almond color. The coat runs big all over and the sleevs hit perfectly at my wrist.I feel like I am swimming in it!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Factory is a complete rip off. You can almost always get it for cheaper retail if you wait for a percent off or it goes on sale (which is quickly now). The quality is TERRIBLE at factory.

    ReplyDelete
  42. jcrewphd, I'm glad you noted something I've noticed, the ballet flats have gotten very low cut. That's fine in the summer, but in the winter, the low cut looks weird. I don't want to wear corduroy and toe cleavage.

I did check out the Oxford heels at Clarks. I didn't buy them because the store was packed and ONE sales guy. But if you like the Oxford heel look and worry that JCs will make you a cripple, these looked like a reasonable compromise.

    ReplyDelete
  43. jcrewphd, thanks. I'm going to call.

  44. ajc - I believe the article was mentioned in the past week here. Someone also noted that it's consistent with past press on Millard S. Drexler over the past years. I like saying his full name. *lol*

Elizabeth - *lol* I need popcorn an' a soda when I come over here. So many things are funny to me.

Pics of the Thandie blazer (solid & marled) and crushed jacquard pencil skirt are in this post. I will also scout for my pic of the novo wrap top and drop it in there as well. Thanks for sharing sale info jcrewphd.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just wanted to post a tip on the Merino Lace Skirt. The model shots don't show the full skirt but you can see it if you open the product page, click on one of the alternate photos at the bottom, then in the popup zoom window, click on the solid color swatch to display the solo product shot.

    HTH someone.

    ReplyDelete
  46. gigiofca, you are so helpful to post the ebay tip. I always ask ebay sellers if the item is retail or outlet, if they actually purchased it in the retail store or the clearance center, if the J.Crew tag is intact, cut or has a line through it. I did have one seller tell me they purchased something at the retail store and the tag actually had the two diamonds on it in the listing photo. I knew what that meant so didn't purchase but I didn't bother discussing it further with the seller either. Buyer beware!

Ha, my verification word is geticked.

    ReplyDelete
  47. AppGal - Bad eBay experiences suck. I just got a J Crew necklace for about $2 and my transaction was fine. It has J Crew stamped on the back and the little J Crew medallion, but who knows. I never held the original in my hands . I purchased the eBay version knowing it could be a fake. I guess I could be called out for supporting those merchants, but given that it's coming from China I always wonder if it's the same factory that made the ones they sold at the store.

    xoxo - getticked. That's funny.

  48. ajc--I read the MD article in the NYer, also the one in the WSJ. I think he's a genius. While perhaps not easy to work for I know people who have worked for and with him who say he is incredibly inspiring. Also admire that he is still married to his first wife who is an intelligent professional rather than dating young model types which he probably could...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Annie and AshleyMac:

Thank you so much for the feedback! It's one of the few items that I really, really love right now and I thought $425 was a little too steep, but now I know it is if the fit is wrong all over and coats are kind of hard to adjust. :(

    ReplyDelete
  50. If anyone will be around the Asheville, NC area this weekend, the Arden Warehouse will be having a huge warehouse sale!

    ReplyDelete
  51. gem twin - Mickey is still married to his first wife? I'm always a sucker for a good love story.

I don't read much of the press (bc frankly there is too much of it to keep track of) but I like reading personal profiles and getting glimpses of behind the scenes action.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I went to my B&M to return an item and ended up purchasing the black floral perfect shirt (retail only?) from the last rollout on sale for $49.99 and the white confetti on sale for $29.99. Both are cute. The black has a dizzy little pink and green design on a black background and will look cute with a pink cardi and black pencil skirt.

No one mentioned the return policy.

  53. "But if you like the Oxford heel look and worry that JCs will make you a cripple, these looked like a reasonable compromise."

Elizabeth-IMO, the funniest comediennes are the ones that poke fun of real-life events (aka Seinfeld etc.) Your comment struck me as hilarious as I immediately envisioned myself practically requiring a wheelchair to leave a wedding after a night of J Crew heels! And sadly, I was carrying them around half that night. With chronic pain in my foot now, I cannot even consider their heels. SO cute but SO painful!

  55. Just in case there is a % off final sale this weekend I wanted to share IRL photos of the 2010 double-serge pencil skirt in vintage wisteria compared to the 2009 version in fresh plum. The colors are both very lovely IMO.

First photo is with flash, the second is without.

Have a great weekend JCAs. I'm off to the country.

  56. Ema, I have a factory cashmere sweater from about 3 years ago... it is the same as retail cashmere. Really, I can't tell any difference other than the tag with the little diamonds on it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What really gets me is the eBay sellers who sell factory jewelry but don't specify that it is factory. For someone who has never been to a factory store, they'd never know, might think it's an older retail piece, or something. There were some glass beaded necklaces at the crewlet a few months ago and I saw tons of them on eBay... and from the sellers' pics, you couldn't tell that the beads were TINY compared to the retail ones, or that they were generally just cheap looking.

  59. I posted about this, but now I actually have the info in front of me: BR is having a 2 day 40% off sale for card holders, today and tomorrow. code: PRESALE
Unfortunately they've either sold out of virtually everything or they took the good stuff off the site. I wanted to buy a lightweight wool suit but there's nothing on the website and the telephone rep insists the items are sold out in every size and color.

  60. Ok I was in store tonight and looking at jewelry in the case. My store had madewell jewelry mixed in with j. Crew!!!! It actually had madewell tags on it! I did a double then a triple take! What's going on? Am I losing my mind?

  61. I have made the mistake of purchasing cashmere at the factory storea nd it is NOT the same. I probably have close to 10 retail cashmere sweaters from retail and they are a world of difference. 72. Well, I am a cardholder and still have not received a coupon. Not surprising. I don't get, what is there to admire about a man whose main drive in life is to sell an umbrella that cost $1.00 to make for $800? I find that despicable. I could never take advantage of people that way, but that is my temperament, I guess (and why I am a broke ph.d in the helping profession). JCrewphd, I also noticed that my Rimini has that "fuzz" you are referring to, just from being in the store. I paid $78 for it, and I thought I was being paranoid and picky, but your post was the final straw, it's going back. I am new to J Crew, but seriously can't imagine how the factory quality could be worse. It gets worse? It must be because I literally only buy knits. Today I wore my knit moto cardigan for the first time, and it looks old. I really need to find a different store I can rely on more.

  73. From article about Drexler:
At Madewell, where he tells me his wife, Peggy, and 18-year-old daughter love to shop, he is perturbed by the markdowns on some black lace-up boots. “Why, why, why?” he asks. “They are such great boots.” The sales assistant explains, “Summer is around the corner and these are the last two pairs.” “Urgh, I hate markdowns,” he says.

  75. Jacks, thanks for posting about the 25% off cards--I'm really surprised only one person has posted about receiving one.

When these "Mickey Cards" were previously issued (in December 2008 and April 2009) they were not issued only to cardholders. As with so many of the customer benefits and discounts that we read about on this blog, the cards were distributed selectively, and the JCAs couldn't necessary determine a pattern in terms of spending practices. Lately, I seem to have fallen onto their "naughty" list and haven't received a perk or discount in quite some time.

I have a couple of FP items in my cart and keep waiting for one of these mythical "cardholder-only" that CC members are promised. When I inquired, this was the response: "We sometimes let our cardholders know about percentage off promotions a day before anyone else." Um, yeah, that really lives up to the list of CC benefits. So, I have my fingers crossed that maybe they're finally making good on their PR promises for CCs! :-)

  76. MDPA: OT, but I read, and am just now finding time to give my opinion, your question about cutting the chiffon off of the caramel colored Cielo sweater.I actually own that sweater in three colors (caramel, autumn spice and deep shale) and the chiffon is not only soft, but also very flattering to the face in the way that it stands. I did check and you actually could cut it so that it is no longer noticable HOWEVER let me state again that I think the chiffon adds a lovely and feminine touch...and the caramel color is beautiful and very versatile with or without the chiffon. HTH.

  78. Sorry this is o/t but I was wondering if someone might recognize this top. I saw a woman wearing a white crewneck tee, slouchy down around the hips, short cufffed sleeves-the sleeves had a dark button on each cuff, and a zipper that started at the back neck and extended a few inches down the back. The top looked perfect but since I don't get out much (& mainly shop JCrew) I have no idea where it could've been sold. Thanks if anyone can help.

  81. Amanda-wow, thanks! This looks like the same shirt except for the shirttail hem. It grabbed at the hips & slouched just right on the person I saw wearing it. After reading through the reviews I see it does come in white @the b&m. I'll have to see if it's the same shirt. Thanks so much for responding!!

  82. @ meow & ajc: I just read the New Yorker article and thought, Mickey hates markdowns? But there are markdowns or 20% off specials every other week at J Crew! In fact, I think that is precisely why J Crew does so well, because it has steeper and quicker markdowns than other mall brands. And please, it IS a mall brand, not a place to buy $800 umbrellas. Wake up, Mickey!

  83. Hello! I have an OT question. Can those who have purchased the featherweight cashmere cardigans or sweaters give me their opinions on the quality and how they've held up? I've debated some sale featherweight sweaters (my brain says run away, but my eyes say ooh laa laa, pretty colors, go ahead and buy some).

I've tried the 12 gauge cashmere and I'm ok with them. Last year I purchased a 14 gauge cashmere sweater and when I received it it had snags on it. I was really shocked the quality dept missed it. Anyway, I returned it right away and have avoided J Crew's 14 gauge cashmere since then. This year JC introduced "featherweight" cashmere, but I noticed it's still 14 gauge. I don't know if they fixed the quality issues since last year--didn't someone once say they heard that JC was working to improve their cashmere? (Or maybe I dreamed it?LOL) I've noticed that 14 gauge merino wool sweaters from JC seem "sturdier" than the 14 gauge cashmere I've seen (but not worn). Thx!

  84. @CMG: I think Slastena posted just recently about her featherweight cashmere piling and falling apart after one wear. I too have experienced this as I had to return a featherweight cashmere tee that had several holes along the underarm area. I know the colors are tempting but all the featherweight cashmere sweaters I have (2 only) has really bad fuzzing all along the sleeves, and anywhere in contact with my bag or whatever. I think the cotton ones fair better in terms of piling and fuzz in the same gauge. HTH.
