J.Crew News: What's Happening Today? {Friday edition}

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am on vacation! Unfortunately, I won't be able to keep up with all the latest J.Crew news, promos, and the like.

So this post is the "catch all" for J.Crew Aficionadas and Aficionados to share with one another the "current happenings" for today. Feel free to post your comments here- from current J.Crew promotions, sales, emails, and even questions on products (regarding fit & size), and the like. :)

What comments do you want to share or ask of other Aficionadas and Aficionados? What is currently happening (in terms of promos, sales, emails, products, and the like)?

  1. I just ordered some things on Madewell and I'm not a regular with J Crew - just get some occassional pieces. How is the Madewell fit compared to J Crew? Can anyone comment on the fits?

    Thanks!

  2. DiamondsandTulle - I expected the fit to be more Jrs and it wasn't, so I was happy about that. I ordered S in the things I have after talking w/a rep on the phone and love everything. You can see 2 items in this post on my blog. HTH

  3. Oh I look at these photos from years gone by and wonder is "that" JC gone for good?

    Very sad...

I do love these photos and these pieces it is how I fell in love in the first place.

  4. New Arrivals in stores today and online September 16th.

  5. What a great picture. Love the outfit and the smiling pretty model;)

  6. Thanks, FFM. I hope someone does an instore report! The last few roll outs I haven't purchased a thing, so I'm hoping for some great fall items.

  7. I'm with you, Lauren. I know there are other retailers catering to JCrew's (old) core customer, but they just don't do the colors and prints as well. Please come back, pre-Jenna JCrew!

  8. I got a "sneak peek" email for the
Stellina sequined shell (29577) - it's a tan silk crepe de chine tank with beads and sequins coming from the shoulder and down across the front. Not really my cup of tea but I'm sure some JCA's will like it. Can't believe that more new arrivals are coming already - does that mean there will be some on the 30th as well? Which is the October rollout? Can't keep up! ;)

  9. I got the Stellina email as well.

Not sure I like the pattern - looks like a toddler's spit-up on his bib.

  10. Re: sequins & beads. Thinking that JC is about to exhaust the list of what they can (loosely) baste sequins on, and hoping that the newest email doesn't mean they're moving on to bugle beads. I associate bugle beads with blue-haired ladies at catered affairs. No doubt JC will call this an update or a rediscovery. Hope to get rid of image of beaded bulky sweater before bedtime.

  11. I just posted a couple pics of a jacket I say in-store last night. Click HERE to see it.

  12. The Stellina looks more "Loft" than JC to me.

Have to see and feel it in person!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think we should start tagging J.Crew items as J.Crew Loft.

  14. There must be someone whose main job is to put glue on a garment, put it in one of those shake n' bake bags filled with beads, pieces of tulle, silk, old jewels and toss it around and think it's something new. Genius.

  15. mommydearest,

    Speaking of prints--

Even the great prints seem to be gone from JCrew. I was looking through my scarves and accessories last night from many years of buying JCrew as well as some skirt and cardigans.

Remember the gorgeous butterfly print as in the bag you have with your name? Loved and bought all it came in--even Crewcuts in the fabric for my daughter--also the lighthouse print, library print, fish skirt-- I mean I could go on and on and they made the prints in scarves as well as clothing. No more that I can find of this type of continuity going on with JCrew.

  16. Genny, ITA about the prints. I think that I purchased every single item made in the 2007 peacock paisley print (except the Emma dress, and I still eye that on eBay). LOL, I don't wear them all at once though!

My JC print shoes, scarves, and sweaters are the items on which I receive the most compliments. For me, they typify the interchangeability that I like about shopping JC--for example, I won't wear the peacock sweater with the peacock shoes, but they will both work with the same Windsor blue tee, etc.

I bought several items in the watercolor prints this spring--I especially liked the wool scarves. I was looking forward to some similar smashing fall prints and have been disappointed so far.

  17. re: FS
my husband sent me a link for some outdoor cushions today from West Elm and there it was in red ink: Final sale items, identified by a price ending in $0.99, cannot be returned. It's gone viral!

wwf--agree on the sequins. I haven't complained as I am old enough to wait out a fashion cycle but I hope I live long enough to witness the post-paillette age.

mommydearest--Jenna has been there for 20 years so isn't she behind all the things we love and hate?

  18. I like the design of the stellina but it only comes in that one really unflattering color. JC keeps putting stuff out in really unappealing colors this past year and then wonders why things have to be marked down so fast.

  19. Gem twin -- perhaps you remember the Peter Principle? We have a Perfect Example: There's a big difference between being the bright young chick who added a sequin motif to a holiday tee in 1995 and the company leader who keeps trying to repeat that success by compulsively inflicting sequins on every sketch that crosses her desk. Meanwhile, I agree - it's a cycle, I have a closet, I'll wait, and I'll hope the company outlasts these tough ( but glittery) times

  20. A while ago, I read an interview of Frank Muytjens, and he was the head desiger until 2007-8 for J Crew womens dept (now he's in charge of men's). Then Jenna took over, with ruffles and sequins.

The look we all miss must have been his work.

    ReplyDelete
  21. wff--TPP could be the case with JL and while I while I am a fan of most of the other things she has offered up she must also be responsible for the ruffles. I have had a few sex, lies, and videotape moments worrying about all the sequins and ruffles mingling in the landfill...

  22. FMM - Thank you for posting pictures! :)

  23. Ji, I didn't know that. It may have been posted in the past and I missed it. Thanks for sharing the info.

  24. So we have Frank to thank for Paris & the Highlands? Interesting.

To those who pine for pretty prints: I very much like the vintage silk scarf in viridian green. It looks smashing against all the purple in my closet.

  25. Genny et al, I KNOW!! Where are all those amazing prints? (I think we all know the answer to that.) Thanks to a wonderful JCA, I am now the (ridiculously) proud owner of the butterfly St. Barth bag in my picture thing-y, and I just kick myself whenever I see a print I missed in my old catalogs. Apparently, it was a mistake to think there would always be another fabulous print around the corner...

I was thinking today in the store, one thing they do really well is name their colors. Vintage wisteria and cobblestone are my two current crushes (unfortunately, I don't like anything that comes in these colors, but I won't digress into that same old story).

Thanks for reminding us, Ji. I believe Alexis posted a few articles here that talked about Frank's and Jenna's changing roles.

  26. Christy - LOL!

I look at that beautiful photo, and I can't help but wonder why in this economy did J. Crew mess with the style that made it successful in the first place.

  27. Jenna Lyons will be at the J crew in Soho tonight for Fashions night out just FYI.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with you, mommydearest.
    Please come back, pre-Jenna Jcrew!:)

  29. La Belle Helene,

I am a purple fan and it fills my closet and I do have that same scarf you mentioned but to me the "print" of the scarf is not in the same league as the other prints of the past. I even found some other gorgeous prints this afternoon digging around like a postcard print silk JCrew scarf and a liberty print scarf with unique open hole edging that was from around 2005 or 6.

  30. From your reporter on Madison Avenue:

the windows of the wedding store have finally been redone. In honor of Fashion Night, we are no longer asked to wear denim cut-offs or furry creatures to costly life-changing events. However I found the creative touch of the leather belt worn by Princess Ticklefeather -- well, pointless. On a more formal note, the sequin mini/shorts/panties (hard to tell from pose of mannequin) were black. Sadly we live in a world where this is a plus.

  31. Was wondering if there's another J Crew blog for those who really like J Crew (past and present)? Not trying to be snarky, but sometimes the comments made here make me wonder why anyone who dislikes the brand so much would bother posting anymore.

  32. to B&M, tried on POW jacket, wow! The fabric is great, the detailing is perfect -- the plaid matches on all the seams, each edge of collar/lapel is perfectly aligned to opposite side. The lining is nice, the pockets are perfectly placed. Mmmm.

It did not come home with me because I am convinced that somewhere I have a pair of RL slacks in a very similar or identical material, and if they fit and do not look like I am dressed up in Nana's clothes, I may be inspired to put them back in circulation with a chunky brown or café au lait sweater. But this is one great jacket. If the slacks don't work for this year I may just run back to the store and grab the jacket,

  35. back from the front: great in-store experience. I did indeed find something to purchase for over $150 but it had to be phoned in for size. Still got the 20% off AND they added on a catalog-only item (that I needed to exchange) and something else not in the shop yet for the same discount PLUS no shipping via red phone. I love J. Crew.

    ReplyDelete
  36. wwf--I am so envious. I pre-ordered the POW jacket but it turns out to be too short for me and they are not doing it in tall sizes. It is a beauty. Seems like I am getting sized out a lot this year and I am not THAT tall...

    ReplyDelete
  37. gem twin, I actually did think the jacket would have been perfect if it were an inch or so longer! Still hunting the old plaid slacks...

    ReplyDelete
  38. We post here because we love J. Crew, but the company has changed its styling and it's just not producing the beautiful clothes that it used to. Since we are the fans, J. Crew needs to listen to us. I for one am not going to blindly accept whatever the company offers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. gem twin,

That is great news that you had a good shopping experience and got what you neeeded;)

  40. in agreement with the previous poster - I love J. Crew, and spent THOUSANDS of dollars a year during that blissful 2007-2008 period. And while I still love my Crew, I spend less. So I lurk, I post, and I read... just would like some of the older styling back. And we all know that J. Crew reads these boards, so why not tell them we're dissatisfied?

  41. oh, and while in store looked at Tilly Two-Tone Satin heels. These will not wear well, don't understand why they're not marked down already. The dark suede version looks like a keeper, but making it up in light-colored satin was a mistake. Threads pulling, every fingerprint showing.

  42. POW jacket - Took me a few minutes to figure out it mean Prince of Wales, duh. Here I was thinking that J.Crew had moved on from camo and on to prisoner of war outfits. :^P

The POW looks nice but those brown tones are not for me. One less person purchasing it full price so hopefully it will go on sale for the fans here. I have one of my Mom's old wool tweedy jackets from J.Crew that must be at least 5 years old and another one that she called "melton" that is probably about 10. Nicely tailored jackets and still in good shape too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I just want to point out that since the transformation of JCrew in the past couple years, the brand has gotten more press in fashion magazines than ever before. Just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The POW blazer (took me a few minutes too to figure out the acronym lol) looked boxy on me, I preferred the donegal one AND I had the same exact in the 90s but I must have given it away (so not re-buying for $325).

OT, I have a 20% off code for one FP item at Talbots. Enter code "lipstick2010" at checkout (you will pay the shipping though). Enjoy!

  45. Sydney, that is because the PR budget has more than tripled… The true story is in the sales/inventory/returns numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I haven't spent anything this fall at J.Crew which has been good for my wallet. I am so disappointed. Where is the old J.Crew? :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the POW blazer is gorgeous but WAY over priced. I am so glad 2others posted that is runs a tad short. Normally JCrew blazers fit me perfectly and I don't have to order a tall ever at 5'10" but I am guessing this one won't work for me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm oddly relieved that it's not just me feeling alienated by the new styling. All the sequins, ribbons, short shorts, and bloomers! Whose life are they designing for?

Frankly, I thought they'd fired me as a customer.

    And I'd been so loyal.

OT--the POW blazer is nice but not for that price. I'm guessing markdowns are coming.

  49. Does anyone know the name of this silk taffeta skirt? I'm kicking myself for not getting it. TIA!
