J.Crew Parties with Muses {from March Catalog}

We all remember the gorgeous March 2010 J.Crew catalog with the nine muses that J.Crew featured. It was discussed a few times on this blog too (refer to the "J.Crew's March Catalog: Behind the Muse {w/Jenna}" post as an example).

A big "thanks!" to Drewablank, who shared a post from Guest of a Guest (click here) which discussed a gathering at the NYC Prince Street store (in February). The event honored the women featured in the catalog as muses.

The following is shared as well: "As guests perused through the J.Crew store on Prince Street, the cash register counters were turned into a bar area where wine and cocktails were served. The latest apparel were displayed, therefore attendees got a first look."

What is interesting about the post is all the great shots of the party. It is actually a lot of fun to check out everyone's outfit. :)

What are your thoughts on the party? Do you like Jenna's outfit? Do you like the outfits/ styling of some of the other attendees? :)

  1. I really liked that catalog concept and hope they revisit it.

As for Jenna's ensemble, I'm reminded of the removing one item before you walk out the door dictum.

  2. Weren't the muses just Jenna's friends/ colleagues/ people who were selling things at jcrew (like the I Love Your Style book)?

If you're not a painter, don't wear paint splattered pants. If you're not in the military, don't wear camos. Maybe JL borrowed the pants from her (artist) husband.

  3. I liked Amandas outfit alot. Great vest with the great bateau neck t.

  4. Sometimes I like Jenna's glasses, but not this time. They look like they are falling off her face.

  5. I did like that catalog concept to feature "real" people. However, I'm sorry, but Jenna looks like a hobo.

  6. Jenna's so pretty...but why the huge glasses that hide her face?! With access to such a fabulous closet, I cannot comprehend why she walked outta the house looking like that.

  7. I like how others dressed for the event but I do not like Jenna's outfit. I know she doesn't want to look like she put effort in her outfit, but with those paint splattered pants, she's screaming attention! This outfit is one of the worst I've seen on her...Yes, loose those glasses!

  8. Jenna looks ridiculous. If my family member showed up to an event in that outfit, I'd take her in for a psych eval.

While I like the catalog concept, I agree with tastymoog. The "muses" seemed to be quite randon; I didn't see anyone who was particularly unique or inspirational or successful. I've been far more impressed with some of the men I've seen featured in the catalog.

  9. Notice how everybody but Jenna is wearing the "traditional, preppy" J. Crew look.

  10. Seriously those glasses have got to go! Jenna looks ridiculous!

  11. I was at this "office party" celebrating the March catalog as well thanks to Jean and her lovely Prince St. PS. Jenna's ensemble including the glasses looked worse in person. Shocker. She is striking and very TALL but I was not a fan of her styling that night. I prefer her look on Oprah sans the glasses. The kooky/hipster vibe doesn't work for her face.

I was also surprised that for a preppy with a twist company, JCrew corporate employees a lot of hipsters/hipster wannabes, which I think explains a lot about some of JCrew's questionable/less than classic pieces.

And it must be mentioned that I overheard two girls in the dressing room who wanted to meet Molly, the designer featured in the March catalog, so that they could share their sizing and quality complaints (same complaints we have seen here). I thought this was so funny. It's not just us! Molly said she's just the jewelry (I think) designer but she'd pass the notes along.

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to share my observations from the party. It was a very fun and I bought a ton from the March catalog.

  12. I feel so sorry for the ladies when you have a Creative Director who dresses like that. I believe Jenna is what they refer to as a "hot mess." And hearing that the fall/winter 2010 look is Edie Beale going to girl scouts camp? There are going to be some challenging times ahead for females as long as Jenna is at the helm.

  13. Stephanie,

    Thanks for the insight.

One of my complaints is that sizing is all over the place. From about 2001-7 I could consistently order the same size. Now even the tee shirts fit differently. Sometimes I wear a M and sometimes a L so I have to order both and see. I have about 15 items to return this weekend b/c of my double size ordering.

Jenna does look like a "hot mess" in this photo and I like big glasses in general but these do not flatter her face.

  14. i was at this party as well (hi stephanie!) and like stephanie mentioned, i'm always surprised how many hipster-esque guests are there! i don't mind it at all (once upon a time i considered myself a semi-hipster!) but i'm guessing it's just another display of the twist jenna has added to a one-time prepster only brand.

and, in jenna's defense, her outfit wasn't as bad IRL--definitely busy, but somehow it worked on her. add to that, she's incredibly approachable and lovely to chat with. i've chatted with her a few times at various events and maybe it's put on for the customers but she's been nothing but warm and friendly--keeps me coming back at the very least!

  15. Jenna looks really bad in the photos. The whole outfit looks like she got dressed in the dark. Wow, I am practically (but not totally:) speechless at what she chose to wear and be PHOTOGRAPHED in!

  16. Looks like a good party. Whenever I go to those type of events, I shop like there is no tomorrow. So much fun though.

As far as her outfit, if Jenna were to lose the glasses or choose lighter frames that fit her face and wear a nice bright scarf instead of the dull plaid one, it would be a huge improvement. I guess we can't all hit the mark 100% of the time.

  17. Jenna looks great! She alway looks great! I would move the the glasses up one inch on her face. I bet they're vintage frames and that's just how they fit. Remember the sequined harem/Hammer pants she wore on the Oprah segment? Carrie Bradshaw is wearing very similar pants in one of the SATC previews. I think Jenna is so far ahead of the fashion curve it's just hard for our eyes to adjust to the things she wears. Six years ago, how many of us swore we'd never wear skinny jeans?

  18. ^^^
FYI, SATC 2 takes place in the Middle East, so I think the Harem pants are justified in that instance. In any event, Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe is make to be gawked at and not emulated.

  19. jcrew1985,
JL ahead of the curve with hipster thick rimmed glasses? I think not. They're not called Buddy Holly glasses for nothing. They've been in fashion since, like the 50s, and have been ubiquitous for nearly as long. (Maybe 10-15 years ago it would have been cooler, but now everyone has them).

I think JL's outfit is fine, I just take issue with the paint splatters.

  20. jcrew1985: If Jenna is so ahead of the fashion curve why are we still seeing ruffles season after season? other stores are peddling the same look as J Crew ON, BR, Talbots etc.

I agree Jenna looks like a hot mess.

  21. Hi Stefanie! I agree with you. She does seem very approachable. And I liked how nervous she was on Oprah and how she could not stop talking about the clothes. She has a passion for JC just like we do. I would just like for her to ditch the glasses.

  22. Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Jenna is a little out of touch with her audience! For those of us who have jobs in the corporate world and whose social circle consists of non-hipsters and real-life moms, I find it more and more difficult to relate to Jenna's scene. I agree that ruffles are waaaaaaaay past their due. Can we get some other options, please? And can we please get the sizing consistent?

Also, Jenna, there are a lot of petites and non-modelesque figures women out there. How about making them muses? I like what Talbots did with their recent catalogue where they featured women of different ages, shapes, and sizes but managed to make them all look gorgeous in their ensembles.

  23. I really like Jenna. After seeing her interviewed on Martha and Oprah, she truly seems almost shy/insecure with a sweet, down-to-earth personality. And I envy her very cool job. I do not understand her fashion choices. I like to remain open-minded about fashionable-types...those in the business and how they might wear things rather unusually. But she doesn't pull it off well and just looks like she's trying too hard. It really takes a special eye to throw unusual pieces together and make it look like you didn't try. I don't think she has this concept down and agree the glasses have to go. I think she will look back years form now and cringe (like some of us do about our 80's looks:)
