J.Crew's Jenna Lyons Talks Trends

A big "thanks!" to HDNB, Carla, & Chris, who shared with us the following news/ video. The video (found at this Facebook page) is from American Express at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

It features J.Crew's Creative Director Jenna Lyons who is talking about trends. Jenna Lyons talks about "borrowing from the boys" and "boyfriend inspired styles" this season. She also suggests the best items for guys to get is the Ludlow suit. She even shows us a "behind the scenes" look at where the graphic tees get made.

What are your thoughts on Jenna's advice? Do you disagree or agree with any of her suggestions for styling?

Note: I tried to share the video from the Facebook page, but it wouldn't let me. I am not 100% sure if the following video I made works. Apologies in advance for any issues with the video. :)

  4. I haven't read the interview with Jenna in Oprah magazine, but I'll venture a guess that she mentions something about *borrowed from the boys* in it. *Borrowing from the boys* seems to have become her catch phrase.

  5. Well, the comment above mine mentioning that Jenna is interviewed in Oprah's magazine was removed...it was the reason I referred to the Oprah interview in my comment.

  6. Honestly -- I think J. Crew should invest some money into some media training for Jenna. Every interview I have seen with her is not all that impressive. She is not very well spoken IMHO although she is a great "billboard" for Crew clothes -- she looks great in everything.

  7. OK I just need to vent for a minute. I am getting tired of Jenna. Her look isn't that fresh anymore; it's a pretty easy formula to follow, and I like that, but I feel like more of a deal is made of it than really should be. I think J.Crew needs to be mindful about Jenna's potential media over-saturation.

The comment someone made a little while ago that Jenna designs for herself really resonated with me. I feel like over time, most of the clothes are being cut for straighter figures. Take the pants for example. I am curvy with full thighs, and I have tried on every pair (and I do mean every pair) of casual pants currently in the store; the only ones I can remotely wear are the favorite fit chinos, and I would have to size up in them and have the waist taken in. To contrast, I have favorite fit chinos from other years that fit me just fine in my regular size.

Don't even get me started on all the skinny/tapered leg pants they are offering now. They look great on those who can wear them, but there is no way I could pull it off. I am pretty sure I am not alone on that either.

The bottom line is that I just really wish J.Crew would offer some pants with a curvier figure in mind. I love J.Crew, but I am getting frustrated that I can't find any flattering pants there.

    OK my rant is done!

  8. Lilaccupcake,

I completely agree with you about the fits on the pants. I am fairly slim (usually a 4 in most stores), but I have a really curvy bottom and thighs. Very few jeans or pants from J Crew work for me at all. I definitely wish they had more items that are not cut so straight.

  9. FFM,

I have the Oprah magazine right here. It reads, "Borrowed from the boys is the mantra for spring, says Lyons, citing the rumpled offhand charm of a casual jacket. Feminine clothes, she explains, seem fresher spiked with masculine elements-an oxford shoe, a big watch, a long cardigan. And menswear fabrics are a fine balance for delicate shades and girly details like sequins. Unexpected combinations are key. The other night, I wore an army green utility jacket for a black tie event with a white tweed dress and tons of jewels, Lyon recounts. I got a ton of compliments."

    Yeah - nothing new there...

  10. Jenna is not a celebrity as much as J.Crew wants to make her one.

  11. ITA with kitsmommy and
Lilaccupcake. JCrew clothes are *not* curve friendly. Everything is designed and sized to fit Jenna's straight, boyish figure type.

  12. Dear Jenna,

Time to get off the man wagon.

    Love,

My rant about J Crew pants is the low rise. I have a long waist and low rise is REALLY low rise on me. I can't stand not being able to tuck in a shirt if want and have it stay tucked, or having my unmentionables peek out from my pants when I sit.

I just wish they would offer more natural waist pants. I know I am probably not in the majority here, but I never even look at J Crew's pants for that reason.

  14. I am 5'4 and have curvy hips and JC pants and shorts are the only pants that fit me well especially in the rise. I have to take the waist in sometimes in the Matchstick jeans but other than that I am happy.

  15. I don't know how we got onto the topic of pants, but I loveeee J. Crew's city fit. I'm 5'4" with negligible hips, and it's the only type of pant I'll wear, period. I wish Banana Republic would offer a similar low-rise style - I absolutely swim in all their cuts.

  17. I'm not very trendy myself. I tend to stick to what I like and what I know works for me. I'll try new styles but will never buy something just because it is the latest trend. That is the very definition of "sheeple".

Love the fit of J.Crew pants, especially the city fit. Now if they could only cut the tops so they accomodate the girls and fit small everywhere else I would be in heaven.

  18. ugh, why does she annoy me so? Please go away Jenna, go away to some other brand. Better yet create your own and give me back my old Jcrew (preppy chic)!

  19. Hey - I'm looking for a J Crew desert floral bauble necklace. Anyone got one & interested selling? Drop me a line.

  20. Nothing new in the video, just continuing the same trends from 2009. I do think so of the J.Crew graphic/designer tees have been much prettier than those offered from competitors. Wonder if they will have another chiffon rose tee this year.

I wouldn't recommend buying a Ludlow suit if you're the kind of guy who wears a suit only for weddings, funerals, job interviews and the annual Christmas party. The super-slim cut will look dated in a few years and for about $600 you probably won't get your money's worth if you're not wearing it a lot. It's a nice suit, just not a classic cut like the Aldridge.

I didn't care for the jacket she was wearing. It looked like upholstery.

  21. I'm personally not a fan of "borrowing from the boys". I'm a WOMAN and want to look like it. Maybe it's because I work in a male dominated field (science) but I have zero interest in looking like a boy. Personally, I also do not buy the distressed looking clothing because I just can't bear to pay extra for holes in my pants. My very humble opinion only! Otherwise, I love J Crew. :)
