"Thanks!" to Marta who suggested a great topic for a post, which is about which coat you currently really love and/or planning to get from J.Crew. There are lots of beautiful new choices in J.Crew's outerwear page (click here to view). Also, the discussion can include conversations like sizing (are coats true to size? or do they need to be sized up or down?), to Thinsulate or not to Thinsulate, and the like.Although I will most likely not purchase a winter coat this season, I am in love with the Italian houndstooth Greta jacket (Item 96180; $375.00). I think the pattern and style of the swing coat makes it stand out for this Fall season. However, if I could buy one coat for the winter, hands down, it would be the Stadium-cloth Shipley coat (Item 99248, $350.00) in white. Not only does it have a beautiful shape for a coat, but the fabric (the stadium cloth) is fantastic at keeping me warm during the bitter cold New England winters.
What J.Crew coat do you currently love and/or planning to get? Why did you choose that coat? If you tried it on (or already own it), please share with us what you think about sizing and the like? Would you recommend the option to Thinsulate?
For me it's the Maggie. I live in So. California so there really isn't a need for a long coat even though the Double Cloth Madeline is super cute.

I have to put in another plug for the double-serge Tuesday trench. I love mine. . . it's gorgeous. Not a deep winter coat, but fine for the pacific northwest and chilly but not 20s weather. The fit is generous. I usually take a small in sweaters and a 4 in jackets, but a 2 was just fine in this great coat. It's on sale, too.

ReplyDeleteFor size... I think they are true to size if you are just wearing a regular 1 layer shirt underneath the jacket. But if you wear multiple layers, definitely go a size up from your regular size...'cause you might not be able to lift your arms. Personally, with or without thinsulate question... I have 2 coat one with and one without... i can't tell the difference b/c temperature here rarely dip below 32 degree for me to feel the difference.
Carmen - They only had one Abstract Rose dress and it was the size 0. It was $89.99 plus an additional % off! What size are you looking for? Have you tried the "we will find it for you" service that JCrew offers?

ReplyDeleteAlso, I am curious about how the Madeline is different from the Lady Day? At a simple glance, they look the same to me, except the Madeline has buckles (if that's what you call it?) at the waist. Are there other differences?
I got the sybil coat in purple at end of last february for $130. At the time the purple wouldn't have been my first choice but was all that was left in my size; now I am so happy with it b/c it is so in this season and it is a nice pop of color without being blinding like some JC colors. I took it out for first wearing this week and already got several compliments. It has thinsulate but it doesn't seem especially warm for me--prob b/c sleeves don't have it? This will be one of my 40 degree plus coats, anything below 35 and I'm going to my puffers (below 25 and it's l.l. bean full-length puffer only!)

ReplyDeleteI ordered the Aubrey, which I've only mentioned like 5x. I promise to report on it, esp since I got a non-neutral color. I'm calling this my first J Crew coat even though the website calls it a jacket.
I would love to have one of the coats in sea salt or another off-white/ivory color. I am loving any of them that aren't double breasted. I have enough of that look.
I am happy that J Crew has had more free shipping options and I hope it continues. I certainly applaud it. And yes, I agree that BR has deeper discounts, but I think they are going for a different customer. If J Crew is bothering with their Collection and new, special boutique stores, it makes sense that they want to maintain a certain minimum req with free shipping offers, etc...
I probably will not be purchasing a winter coat this year from them. I went a little coat crazy last year and ended up with three-the lady day in sea salt, the sybil in violet, and the wool pique gramercy coat in flame.
ReplyDeleteIt's not quite coat wearing weather here yet but out of those three I am looking forward to wearing the Gramercy the most. The color is gorgeous, I love the vintage styling and the wool really IS super heavy and warm.
If I were to choose a coat from this current season, it would be the double cloth lady day in bright berry. That color is gorgeous and I don't have a pink coat yet. I do love the double cloth fabric too, it wears very well IME.
I have the Plaza coat in camel and ADORE it. It is a wonderful coat, and I got it with thinsulate for when I visit family in MN. For where I live right now, the Tuesday Trench will be the perfect weight.

ReplyDeleteIt's a personal preference but I agree with Gigi on the double-breasted: I tend to pass over coats in that style now. I wore my double-cloth a lot for the past two winters (good for TX, only in spring in Paris) so I tend to avoid that cloth now too.
ReplyDeleteI'd love something purely for fun like the French serge day coat, but even though I can get over that it's not going to be for warmth as we slip into winter, I don't really like the color.
I just got the Plaza in black with thinsulate-- I used to have the Plaza in brick red from the days when J. Crew had plain lining. It's with my mother now; the color is hard to find without an old-fashiony style but she doesn't like to wear it because J. Crew coats are "heavy". Apparently, Max Mara is not heavy. Oook, mom.

ReplyDeleteI love my black wool Charlie coat from Winter 2006(there's one on eBay if you want to see a pic - 330279673288) - it has three-quarter sleeves, double-breasted, Peter Pan collar. It's incredibly flattering, looks great open or closed, and has that vintagey feel that I love in coats. Best of all, I got it brand new from eBay last October for $100.
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the lookout for that great camel coat after the whole Dana thing, and am getting the Harriet in Heather Acorn to see if it will do the trick. I think that I may have more luck with something single-breasted this time as to avoid all that "volume" in the trench-style JC coats/jackets from this year. Funny, the thing that really made Dana a deal-breaker for me was that shirring across the top back that made it small in the shoulders. The only pic of the Harriet that I can't see is the picture of the back - if it is shirred I will not be happy! ;)
Also, I need to cheer for the end of final sale. WOOHOO!
I have a plum peacoat on waitlist. I'm hoping it comes in, but I know that waitlist isn't a guarantee. I ordered it without the thinsulate, since I live in SC and it doesn't get super cold here.

melanie: The Madeline coat has 3 buttons and the inset button detail at the waist. The Lady Day has 5 buttons and the inset detail at the waist does not have buttons. There are no buttons on the sleeves of the Madeline, but there are on the Lady Day. The Madeline does not have as much of the seam detailing on the outside of the coat as the Lady Day, either. The Madeline is a tad bit more casual than the Lady Day, IMO. :) HTH!

It's fitted, has pockets, but bells out a bit at the hips, which is perfect for me b/c that's exactly where I am bigger. I love the double breasted empire waist too. and the lining is to DIE for!

I love J Crew coats! I have the Gramercy coat in Bright Alpine, the Boulevard in Navy, the Greta in Persimmon, the Tuesday Trench in Navy, the Lady Day in Poppy, and the Felicia in Black. I had an Emily (similar to the new Madeline) in Brown, but I recently sold it on Ebay as it was too big for me. I hope to buy the Madeline in brown as a replacement. I wear skirts and sweaters every day and am not a big fan of blazers, so I wear my coats often.

ReplyDeleteOT, but I received an order yesterday and just wanted to RAVE about the Metallic Vita Cami. It goes with so many of the sweaters that I already own, and has a very fluid, polished look. I got the size 0 and it is a generous cut that I will only be able to wear tucked in so I would suggest to size down if you plan on getting it. The color is very muted which is what, in my opinion, makes it so versatile. The items that I tried it on with were:

ReplyDeleteI tried on a coat at Jacob, a store here in Canada, & it was 85% wool & 15% nylon, & the bottom of the coat had these awful creases in it. Has anyone found that to be an issue with jcrew coats?
Also, I've got really cold winters where I live.. Is there any difference in thickness b/w the double cloth day coat, wool/cashmere plaza, & double cloth madeline?

ReplyDeleteI'm adding to what FFM stated about the difference b/w the Lady Day and Madeline. This question actually brought about this post idea.
I emailed CS to find out the difference b/c they are both double-cloth, and the Madeline is very similar to a double-cloth I bought 2-3 years ago (don't remember name), which I LOVE. It's in a deep aubergine color that I, seriously, get compliments on EVERY TIME I wear the coat. It fits me so well. It's classic but feminine b/c of the a-line shape to the bottom. And the colorful lining is one of my favorite parts about the coat.
My coat doesn't have the tabs at the waist like the Madeline. And I also didn't get it w/Thinsulate, so I have to layer if it's cold or wear my puffer. The CS wrote me that the Madeline hits a bit above the knee, like mid thigh; and the Lady Day hits at the knee. To me it also seems the Lady Day may not be as a-line shaped at the bottom. I am considering getting the Lady Day b/c my coat now IS so similar to the Madeline. I'll prolly be getting it in Heather Majestic Purple b/c I realized I like color in my winter coats, but nothing too loud.
Sizing:
The coat I have is a size 10. I am a 34C with slightly broad shoulders so I tend to size up for coats. However, I think I may have lost some weight since buying my last coat and/or wearing things more fitted. I tried the 6 and 8 in my B&M in the Madeline, and the 6 fit fine! I was wearing a featherweight merino sweater at the time. On the other hand, the coat I have from a few years ago still fits me fine, as well. I thought this sizing discrepancy was weird. CS said the sizing hasn't changed "to their knowledge" since I purchased my last coat. Maybe, maybe not.
The mens coats are quite true to size. I have the university coat in charcoal with Thinsulate and quite like it. The Eaton toggle coat looks pretty good, but I'm afraid that I might look like Paddington Bear in it. It's the type of thing you must see face to face before trying.
ReplyDeleteI also have a Strellson suede coat like the university one offered by J.Crew and I love it. Hands down my favorite and the one that gets the most comments. Something about a thich lush suede that just works.
Marta, the coats with thinsulate are warm enough for us, but if you're out walking for an hour in the bitter cold go with a puffer in down. I wear my wool university coat all winter and it works well for me. I usually have a sweater and shirt on under it. I drive to work as well. Hope this helps. And no creasing or folds with the fabric.

anon @ 9:28: I have the Whisper Lame shirt in Shell, Soft Graphite, and Dark Gold. I wore the Soft Graphite under a Charcoal colored sweater the other day (J Crew sweater, but can't remember the name...from last year or possibly the year before that!) I got the Shell color to go with the Papaya Summerweight cardi (as was shown in the catalog). I got the Dark Gold and had FFM do an outfit for me which I have gotten many compliments on! THANKS FFM!! I think that they look wonderful when worn under sweaters or jackets. Shimmery, but not over the top. HTH. :)

ReplyDeleteIt fits TTS imo. I am a 34C size 4 and got the size 4. I was concerned about the "slim shirt" description. Doesn't feel too tight and I wouldn't have liked the 6. The fabric feel is soft, not scratchy. The shirt is lightweight which makes layering very, very easy.
I bought two coats, this year--and they're both purple! However, they are two completely, drastically different shades of purple, so I feel good about the purchase.

Yes the thinsulate is just in the body, not in the arms. I got my thinsulate coat on FS for $130 total, so it was worth it, but not sure it really helps much with the warmth.

I love my Lady Day coat, and am wearing it for the first time this season, as it's gotten pretty cold here in NY. I purchased the coat last season, with thinsulate which I think is key for colder climates. I ordered one size up from my normal, to a 4P to take into account layering and cozy sweaters... fits like a glove. I bought it in black because it goes with everything from day to night... I add pops of color by accessorizing with my scarf and gloves. It really is a beautiful coat that hangs well, and the material does not wrinkle or crease.

ReplyDeleteThe deep aubergine coat you mentioned from about two seasons ago might be the Emily. I have both the Emily and the Lady Day and the Emily is definitely more A-Line since it only has buttons on the top half and one hidden snap a few inches below the waist.
My favorite is probably the navy stadium-cloth with Thinsulate double-breasted coat from about 3-4 years ago. That is probably one of the warmest wool coats I own. I am small on top so I find double-breasted coats add width across the chest area to balance out my hips.
Hi Marta... the other Marta! Yes, lint can be an issue, but I've found that it's not as bad with the Lady Day. There were other wool coats that I've had where I felt like I was a lint magnet! For the most part I only get a bit of lint at the neck and shoulders, from my scarf rubbing against it. The rest of the cpat is pretty lint free. I just use a tape lint brush to clean it off, quick and easy.

ReplyDeleteThe year before that, I got a coat that had leather buttons and a hood with thinsulate in camel. LOVE that coat too. I don't know the style of it though.
I also have an old-school peacoat and a toggle coat in camel and heather grey. Neither of those have thinsulate, and I can definitely tell a difference.
I didn't know that thinsulate was only in the body though. It seems like the whole coat is warmer though.

ReplyDeleteI personally dont like any of jcrew coats. I find them very.. well... old fashioned. Every coat maker makes coats similar to jcrew. There is nothing special about the styles. I just got an absolutely fabulous coat from Helen Wang on sale for $130 (originally over $400)- it so fashionable and fabric feels so nice! I am very happy with it.

One of my favorite is the bella coat. It is the same as the bella jacket, only it is a coat. I have one sitting in my closet right now. I think it is one of the most feminine coats from JCrew.

ReplyDeleteMy everyday go-to coats are the plaza coat in camel or ivory and the lady day coat in the chocolate color. They're all very elegant and work perfectly in a variety of situations, and since I tend to wear a lot of ivory and browns, they always perfectly compliment my clothing.
ReplyDeleteBut when I want some color (which is at least 4 times a week when it gets to those long stretches of Chicago winters!), I head for my bright alpine Gramercy coat (which I LOVE) or my bright red Sybil coat. Unfortunately, both are a tiny bit tight on me this year, so I had to add a couple in larger sizes. I went for the green Lucille, which I think is just so unique, the bright saffron lady day coat, and the dark poppy Madeline. The Madeline hasn't arrived yet, so I can't wait to try it on. It looked so pretty in the store though!

ReplyDeleteI have both the Wool Tuesday Trench in Navy and the Lady Day in Sea Salt. I am really enjoying wearing both coats so far this season (yes, here in New England, Coat Weather comes early!) I love the feminine shape of the Lady Day This coat was actually my second choice for a dress coat - I ordered the Plaza Wool/Cashmere coat first. I fell in love with the gorgeous fabric on that coat as soon as I touched it, but the mirror didn't lie - the coat did nothing for me. I looked at least 2 sizes larger than I am, and it did not fit me well - it was much too large through the torso. It is definitely intended to fit over even a bulky sweater. I needed a coat I could wear to work over dresses or trousers, with mostly blouses or light sweaters underneath. While I wish I could have kept both coats, I am very happy with the Lady Day. It runs tts in my opinion. Likewise, the Tuesday Trench is a great coat for casual wear or less dressy situations. I wore it today over jeans and a sweater jacket - the navy coat looked smashing with a lime green scarf looped around my neck and tucked into the coat. (I hadn't even noticed the silk lining of the same color in the sleeves of the coat.)
ReplyDeleteWhen I bought my Lady Day, it was not available in all the bright colors. If it had been, choosing a color would have been very difficult. I still would love a camel colored coat, and the Plaza in a smaller size might just end up being it if it goes on sale.

I have about 10 J Crew coats in various colors, so it's getting harder to buy a new coat without repeating colors.

It's so pretty, I really wish it fit me better, but I hope it can find a nice home with another Aficionada!

Anon -- the dark poppy color is definitely more of a red than an orange. I bought a deep persimmon lady day coat first to replace my red Sybil, but it seemed really orangeish to me, and that wasn't what I was looking for -- I wanted red. Later that day I wore a deep persimmon sweater to my B&M to compare it to the new coat colors, and my sweater was very clearly orange in comparison to the dark poppy Madeline. I went home and promptly sent the deep persimmon coat back and ordered the dark poppy Madeline. If they'd had it in my size at the store, I would have snapped it up right there!
ReplyDeleteI mentioned that I was interested in the Carrie coat in a post yesterday. Well, I went to the store yesterday to try it on and unfortunately, it's too big. I also tried on the Tulip, peacoat, and I think the Felicia, but all were a bit too long in the arms for me. I may have to consider ordering petite. Too bad the Carrie coat does not come in petite sizing.

ReplyDeleteI was just talking to a sales rep in a B&M store this weekend who told me that J.Crew started using a new fit model for this season's winter coats. Previously, they were using a girl who was very narrow in the shoulders. Case in point, although I am normally a 4, I wore a 6 (or 8 with thinsulate) in the old coats. In the new coat, I am a 4 (or a 6 with thinsulate).
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to order a size up when going with the thinsulate- which is totally worth it, by the way. I live in a very cold part of the country and I have NEVER been cold in my thinsulate lady day (provided I'm wearing a hat, scarf, and gloves).
I live in Canada buy at least one new wool coat every winter. I need to wear same at least 5 days a week so quality is important.
ReplyDeleteI have the Plaza in ivory, Peacoat in pink and Lady Day in regal purple, along with an older grey wool coat that is no longer available and the name escapes me. They all fit well and are very flattering. If I had to choose one it would be the Lady Day coat because I love the double-cloth fabric, the colour is gorgeous and fit perfect. The regal purple is striking with my red hair and I get tons of looks and compliments every time I wear it. Very feminine.
Both the plaza and pea coats are lined with thinsulate and it's great for the peacoat but the plaza seems to be a bit bulky with the insulation on the lower part of the coat and the drape is slightly affected, not totally smooth. The thinsulate does make a difference in our cold climate, but if it is a little warm out then it's too much.
JCrew coats are well-made although I have many coats, I am often reaching for my JCrew classics.
I absolutely love love j crew coats. Last year I bought the short buffalo lumberjack print coat that stopped at the hip, and this pattern seems to be really popular this season. This year I bought the lady day coat in royal violet and I think it definitely fits true to size. I thought about getting it in petite, but it was way too short in the sleeves, so I got the regular.

ReplyDeleteI'm looking for last year's navy stadium cloth toggle coat in a size 2. Does anyone know where I could get one (even used!)? I should have gotten it last year, but I figured there would be a good replacement in this years collection, but there's not. I have searched everywhere (ebay and craigslist) and can't find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The classic peacoat (99728)... Online, it is with thinsulate. In-store, it is not, but it has the same exact SKU. I was going to order online, but I first checked a local store. I asked a personal shopper, and was told that the 99728 thinsulate version is only available online. The in-store 99728 (confusing, isn't it?) has a tag that says Thermore. It does not have any thinsulate tags. The in-store 99728 is the same $250 as the on-line 99728 with thinsulate. I picked up the in-store version since they had 30% off, and I had an additional 10% off promotion.

I am hopping on board late here, but this site is perfect for the type of info I seek! Coat sizing with J.Crew. They are their winter sale now. I ordered my usual size (6) in the Plaza but it was way too large! What? So I returned it and ordered a Madeline in size 4 ..gulp...with thinsulate. Wonder if it will be too small. Sounds like Madeline does run a bit big...but from this thread it sounds like Lady Day runs true to size! As I have been waiting for Madeline (it is "released" (see other thread on that one)) , I wonder if I will actually get it. It has been a while. Wish they would tell me as if they are all out, then I would perhaps order a Lady Day!
