J.Crew Stores: 40-50% Off Final Sale {yey!}

Mary (in the "J.Crew Aficionadas: Please Re-Read :)" post) let us know that her local store (in Rockaway, NJ) is offering an additional 50% off final sale items. Gigiofca (in the same post) also mentioned that her local store (in Pleasanton, CA) is also having an additional 40% off final sale items. I also called one of my local J.Crew's (in New Haven, CT) and they are offering an additional 40% (not 50%, but still a great percent!) off final sale items. The store associate also told me that the additional 40% percent off started today (but it could be just for that store). :)

So chances are that your local J.Crew store is offering an additional percent off final sale items ranging from 40-50% off (which is awesome!) :)

Is your local store offering an additional 40-50% off final sale items? If so, please let us know. Are you planning to visit your local store this week to see if they are offering a higher additional percent off on final sale? :)

  1. As of Monday night, the discount at the Easton store in Columbus, Ohio was 25% for womens and 30% for mens. If it's gone up since then, then I wish I had held off on the sweaters I bought. By the way, the dream tie cardigan is there on final sale even though it is full price on the web site. With my teacher discount, I got it for $45. It's things like that that make me wonder if I'll ever shop online with J. Crew again (as long as I live near a B&M).

  2. The B&M in Orlando has 40% off Final Sale. :) Not sure if I'll go out...I'm trying to hold off on purchases until the Holiday rollout in mid October...YAY...can't wait!

still seeking the eggplant purple color--do you recall your store having that color in the dream tie?
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  4. covert5, no, they did not have the purple. That's what I wanted, too, but I settled for the navy. They also had plenty of grey, yellow, and hot pink (which is not available online).

  5. Couple questions/comments...

Can one order a sweater full price online and then take it into the store and ask them to adjust to the final sale price? It kinda makes steam come out of my fingertips anyway--just writing this nonsense--I know you follow me as to why.

Also-I CANNOT believe that some of the new stuff is SOLD out already! This is VERY peculiar to me--are they only making their product in limited quantities-esp the "special" items such as berry jackets and merino rose cardigan..you follow?

I am intrigued with the notion that they are gonna teach us that items we want aren't going to make it to FINAL SALE so you better buy em at full price or with the occasional coupon that gets released. This would stop the FS from happening for SO long as there wouldn't be the product to place on there. Am I on to something??
Maybe they will have product come out more frequently but make less of each item--make sense??
Thoughts on this idea?? Maybe part of the new upscale market they are aiming at?? Food for thought..

  6. The dream open cardigan and the dream tie cardigan are now both in the final sale section. I'll be heading to Michigan Avenue during my lunch break to see what percentage discount they're offering on the final sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Covert 5 -- Mickey Drexler said as much, that they weren't going back to production when items ran out, because they didn't think their customers wanted to see "everyone" wearing their clothes. I got the chiffon ribbon-trim cardigan, which I love, pretty early. It ran out fast.

  8. Has anyone bought the lux wool wellies? Are they comfy enough, would I need to put a gel insert? I'm torn between them and the crazier colored, but cheaper, final sale rubber wellies.

  9. Hmm.. I ordered some FS items last week over the phone & they honored the 25% off, b/c there are absolutely no stores anywhere close to where I live. Do you think they'd do a price adjustment to 40% or 50%? Or are price adjustments not done on FS items?

Regarding the merino rose cardigan in plum, I have been checking it every day and it has only been available in two sizes--extra small and medium. Has anybody seen this in store in other sizes? It's so frustrating!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Marta, to my knowledge price adjustments are done on full priced items only. maybe if it was the day after you ordered your items and/or they had not shipped out yet you might get a nice CS to give you an adjustment.....but from a week ago? already got the items? don't think so:(

    ReplyDelete
  14. Covert--the rose cardigan is NOT sold out. It was up with the new arrivals and for some reason was taken off, but if you type in the catalog number under "search" (98781Q) it comes up in all colors and sizes. I think this is just another website glitch.

    ReplyDelete
  15. anon @ 11:25 -- I haven't received the items, nor have they shipped.

    ReplyDelete
  16. covert5, I also cannot believe stuff is selling out already...WOW...looks like everything I wanted is going, going, gone soon. I have about 1,000 in items I want and am so tempted to order...most is low stock with only a few left...cashmere cardigan, ruffle Astrid, etc. I am so bummed. I got my cashmere cardigans last Nov. on sale......not this time:( Yes, they seem to be having limited amounts of items this year...pay full price or do without:(

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was planning on going to my store anyway! If they have the 40% off, it's like an extra bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  18. $1,000 dollars worth of goods NOT 1,000 items in my shopping bag

    ReplyDelete
  19. OK actually a few colors are sold out in a few sizes, but if you are willing to be flexible on color, you can still get the cardigan.

    ReplyDelete
  20. marta: it never hurts to call and ask...I know from experience that they used to price adjust if the items had not shipped yet. This was also on Sale and Final Sale items...not just full priced items. A lot of changes have taken place recently, so this may no longer be the case, but as I said before, it never hurts to call and ask. :)

  22. NEED HELP LOCATING THIS:

Andie Bag in the Flame. Has anyone seen it at their store?

I know they have it online but I would rather get it with the additional discount.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thank you for that info--that was SO sweet but it was gone:(

    cass-
They are OUT of the plum which isn't surprising if they were gonna be out of a color--this was shown catalog, purple very popular this Fall and marketed elsewhere too--all cause for it's demise.
    But my store has it:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anon 11:47 handbag-
they should honor the addl 40%--have them call your store to confirm. If the rep is really adamant--hang up and call again.

  25. OT: Here is a positive!! :) I purchased a velvet Bella in Brown, size 0, off Ebay and it fit (snug, but not overly so). Next I purchased (off the website) a wool tweed one in, I believe, the color Azalea, size 4 and for some wonderful reason that I can't explain it fit me too! Yippee. They are so beautiful, I can see why everyone here has such wonderful things to say about them! Thank you aficionadas!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. jcrewjunkie: I hear ya! I don't live near a b&m either. I can only imagine the savings I could get if they honored this sale online too :( I just made a purchase this morning...the rustic french terry pullover in weathered stone (FS) and the grosgrain city tee cardi. yay! I was able to use the $25 off code so I'm happy :)

  27. I saw the Andie bag at the Northbrook Court store last week.

  28. Fidele@1040am:
That's what I like to hear! I always liked the fact 1)JCrew doesn't put emblems/icons on their clothes (except critters which we can opt not to purchase) and 2) I'm not a clone wearing the same clothing as everyone else.

It's fine with me if they run out of items as long as they keep desiging new, equally beautiful merchandise.

Oooh, I'm heading to the B&M today anyway. Hopefully there will be more items on sale or an add'l 40% off.

    ReplyDelete
  29. covert05: I returned the dream tie cardigan in XS in deep eggplant by mail last week. It's showing on the website this morning. Good luck!

  30. I'm thinking about stopping by a store today, any ideas on which location might have a better final sale selection: the rockefeller or madison ave? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. jcrewjunkie: Congrats on your Bellas! I recently purchased the Herringbone in Heathered Camel off of Ebay and it is just FABULOUS! I am really looking forward to the cooler weather so I can wear it. :) I would love to have a Velvet Bella, too...you are so lucky!

Btw...did you try calling CS for the price match? My store has the 40%. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. An extra 30% off sale items at the Copley Place (Boston) J.Crew store.

I purchased 8 pairs of socks in multiple colors (Tipped cotton solid and Argyle) which were 20% off for 3 or more.

Also noticed a significant number of marked down items including Tartan shirts, Hoodies and khakis at $10 or $20 off the original price.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I called CS an hour ago, and there are about 10 velvet Bellas and 2 Herringbone Bellas in the inventory. Velvet (sizes 2, 4, 8) and herringbone (4 & 8). More leaf and chestnut colors but there's one Azalea. I wanted them so badly but not my size, grrrrrr!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. The website shows zilch Bellas but I tried my luck by calling and managed to snag a velvet one this morning.

  35. jcrewjunkie & FFM- congrats on the bellas! i was asking yesterday for some advice on mine- the collar standing up was really bugging me for some reason. i was making my hair stick out and rubbing my chin. does this happen to you too? or do i just have a weirdly short neck?

  36. Hi, I am brand new to this whole blogging thing and I really had no idea where I was supposed to send a question, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. My question is this, is there a particular time that JCrew puts it's items on sale in the final sale section? It seems like I am always missing out on items. I just adore JCrew but I'm a single mother to twin 6 year olds and as it is now I am unable to afford to buy things full price, final sale items are about my only option. Any help or insight on this would be greatly appreciated! And BTW, I love reading this blog!!

  40. jcrewjunkie,
Welcome to the Bella Azalea Club!!! :-) I love, love, love this jacket above all - I also have the heather charcoal and black, but there is just something special about the azalea.

I can't wait to wear mine again this fall. I got so much use out of it last fall, including wearing it while I was in Paris :-)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Melissa! About the Bella...are you able to wear your hair pulled back into a chignon or ponytail? I think it helps with the collar if your hair is off your neck...if you have noticed in most of the pics for the Bella, the models have their hair up: Click Here and Here . For me the jacket doesn't really rub against my neck or my chin, but I would suggest possibly wearing a turtleneck to help keep the wool off of your neck. Also, you could tried pressing it so that the collar turns out from your chin a little.

Btw...does it touch your skin if you don't button it up all the way?

    ReplyDelete
  42. scrltrider,

it seems like they refresh with new sale items between 8-10am EST. There have been times lately when I've checked at 8am and again at 9am, and there was a bunch of new stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  43. appgal: Thank goodness for the little incentives like $25 off! Congrats on your purchase! :)

melissa: I did read yesterday that the collar rubs your face AND makes your hair look "funky"...LOL. My hair is about an inch below my shoulder so I don't really have a problem there. Additionally, I have been "poppin my collar" for so long that I probably have callouses on either side of my face rendering me insensitive to anything that touches it! LOL. If I recall someone said to pin the sides of the collar down when it is in your closet which I think sounds like a good idea. Let me know if it works.

FFM: Is it the Heather Nut color? I think that it is so gorgeous and remember it from last year's catalog paired with one of the Liberty shirts and a Printed Calf-hair belt...so, so chic!! :)

la belle: What did you wear "our" Azalea Bella with? I'd love to know, and simply can't wait to wear it!! Woo hoo!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. FFM: Out of curiosity, what size did you order in the bella? I have noticed that we are similarly sized up top and I am interested in one of those bellas :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. FFM: I'm wondering if camel is the right color description for the Bellas on ebay. It looks slightly darker than the camel shown in J.Crew photos. Is it heather nut? If you don't mind me asking, which ebay seller is this? I'd like to get one but want to make sure I buy it from a reliable seller. Thanks!! ~ Katie

  46. Thank you for your reply Heather, I really appreciate it!!

  47. Hi Michelle! I actually bought a size 6 in the Bella. I am considering setting the buttons over just a bit, as it isn't as fitted in the waist as I would like, but the 4 would definitely have been too tight across my shoulders. It is perfect if left unbuttoned...I haven't tried it with a thicker sweater yet, but that may also solve the *bit too big* at the waist issue, as well. Hope this helps...let me know if you have any other questions! :)

  49. Question for all you lucky azalea bella people - is there any way one of you can post a picture of your jacket? I absolutely LOVe the azalea color - I have a few cashmere sweaters in it - but I've never heard of heather azalea and would love to at least see what it looks like on the bella. I've looked everywhere online and can't find a picture of one! Thanks in advance, you guys rock!

  50. Report back from 45th and Madison NYC store: Sale was extra 40% off, but there was nothing new in the sale section and it was very picked over. They did have a bunch of the lightweight merino v-necks and those ribbon-tie belts with the flower marked down from $38 to $9.99, minus 40%.

They did get in the new merino rose cardigan. They are already sold out of the plum, but had all the other colors plus a heather wheat type color that is not on the website. I was going to purchase one, but when I tried it on I was underwhelmed. It just looks like a plain old cardigan that has 2 small pom-poms sewed onto one side of the collar. I noticed that the "flowers" on some of the colors are a little large and more flower-like whereas on the light pewter for example, they just look like 2 silk pom-poms.

  51. out of curiosiuty, which dream tie cardigan is easier to find, dk egg plant or the sterling silver one?

    ReplyDelete
  52. CORRECTION-
    Rockefeller is 40% off

    ReplyDelete
  53. anon: OT, but I have the silver heather and just returned the dark eggplant. For some strange reason, the eggplant is very stiff and not as soft as the heather silver. Maybe it's a fluke, but I got DH to do a "blind" test, and he concurred! The navy is great, so soft and sleek (feels a size smaller) but I have too many navy cardis.

    ReplyDelete
  54. jcrewjunkie: was it called Heather Nut? Sorry! It's definitely a camel/nut color, for sure! :)

katie: A picture of the Bella I have is shown Here . It is just slightly darker IRL, and truly beautiful. :) The seller I purchased it off of on Ebay was siopsynsam2005, but she now appears to be selling under the ID momsclutteredcloset and has a Bella in this color in size 4 and 8.

    ReplyDelete
  55. FFM: Thank you! That's the color/ebay seller I'm considering but I'm just confused about the actual color. It does look much darker than the J.Crew photos. Could you confirm it's not an outlet Bella?~ Katie

    ReplyDelete
  56. anon @1:51: That is the color of Bella that I just purchased...it is Camel/Heather Nut.

    ReplyDelete
  57. FFM- yeah, i can pull my hair up, that definitely helps! i wore it open yesterday and the collar still rubbed. i am going to try pinning down the sides and see how it does next time! thanks for your response ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. FFM: I got my Camel Bella from the same ebay seller too. It's gorgeous, and I can't wait to wear it!!!

Katie: The seller ships from the Philippines, and as far as we know (someone had also posted details of how the seller had access to Bellas in the Philippines), it's a genuine--not outlet--Bella.

    ReplyDelete
  59. anon- i bought mine from ebay seller siopsynsam2005 too, and had a good experience. i have not seen the outlet bellas but as far as i know mine is the real thing. it is lined with 2 colors of silk and has leather-covered buttons as described on jcrew. HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  60. katie: Just as anon @2:06 and Melissa said...the seller ships from the Phillipines and the Bellas are just fabulous! :) I purchased from her on a referral and was not disappointed at all. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ah! All this Bella talk. I bought 3 in the most recent final sale and have been stalking my own "Order History" page to see when they will ship. I think the navy one will be cancelled, but that means I should still get the charcoal and the heather nut.

    Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, and I really suggest calling in to CS if you want to order, although the last time I did (this weekend), they told me that there were NO wool herringbone Bellas left in anything but larger (like 12, 14) sizes. But Anon at 12:38 just posted that there were more wool Bellas available. I guess if those are your sizes, you're in luck...!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Congrats ladies on your beautiful Bella coats! They are oh so lovely :) The closest I have ever gotten to seeing one in person was one of the outlet Bellas. They don't even look as nice as what's shown online, but then again, I haven't really been impressed with the jcrew outlet period!

    Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  65. FFM, thank you for posting the link with a photo of the Bella jacket. I couldn't remember what it looked like, and there's been so much talk about it on the blog that I was dying of curiousity! Also, thank you to Heather for mentioning the time of day when the JC web site seems to be updated. I had wondered about that. I really do enjoy reading this blog. Additionally, my life has not been so hot lately, and I've mentioned that occasionally, and you all have been very kind to me. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Katie: I think the waterfall looks really fun!

    ReplyDelete
  72. In my expierence, If they don't have the final sale note attached, then that item is most likely going to be cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I prefer the giraffe. Classic statement piece. The waterfall is plastic beads :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. katie: I have not seen either necklace in person, but if I had to choose...I would personally pick the Giraffe necklace over the waterfall. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous - As an owner of both necklaces you mentioned and the seahorse and the frog, I can tell you that the giraffe garners the fewest amount of compliments and comments per wearing. The problem with the giraffe is that the blue eye is what really makes the necklace POP. However, the eyes are so wide-set that they aren't really visible head on. Even though the waterfall is plastic, no one knows that unless they touch it. I say waterfall.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Personally I find the waterfall necklace scary. I'm Indian and the necklace reminds me of Bollywood movies and over the top stage props along the lines of paper mache tiaras.

Does anyone have (or tried on) the Cashmere Tunic (95078)? I'm wondering how the sizing runs and if the v-neck is very low? TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  78. i have the cashmere tunic and it fits HUGE! i'm typically an XS in jcrew, never need to size up, only wish they had XXS to size down to most of the time. the cashmere tunic is beautiful, love the cashmere and the color (got it in the lt grey). but it was sooo big, i gave it to my mom who's a size M.

  80. Does anyone have item numbers for the bellas? I've called in a couple of times now and they keep telling me they have none in stock, but I don't think they are doing a full search, just a search by keyword. I really want a couple of bellas, any colour, in a size 12 or 14. I saw the light herringbone on the website this past weekend and didn't order it (!!!) thinking I didn't have much in my wardrobe to go with that colour. How I wish I did :)))))))

  87. Jcrewjunkie,
I wear my beloved azalea bella from September (well, I would if it wasn't still 80 degrees) deep into winter... early on, I wore it last year over a very light pink tee. Later on I wore it over a sweater (remember the dream button crewnecks from last fall?), either in heather grey or the pine green - I know not everyone loves green and pink, but I do - and also, I got the most beautiful silk pink-with-fuchsia-and-green-flowers scarf at Nordstroms, which looks great with the azalea bella and green sweater. I also wear the bella buttoned mostly when it gets colder, so only a little of the sweater goes. Oh, and I usually wear it with jeans, but I've also worn the jacket with a black wool pencil skirt.

Pardon my enthusiasm, but I just believe everyone would be better off with a bella jacket in their life :-)

    ReplyDelete
  88. 86657 is sold out :((((

I should have bought it when I saw it...I could always have tried to sell it on the weekly exchange...oh well....

FFM, I just bought several of the Chiffon Rosette belts last night and was wondering if you had done any polyvores for them at all? I purchased 3 of them (all except for the buttercup indigo...I couldn't pass them up at $7.50 each, although I suppose it would have been $6 each if I had waited to order them today!)

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  89. a: have you checked out all the Velvet Bellas on Ebay? There were quite a few...not sure what sizes though. The sellers might also have the item number posted in their listing, or you could email them for the number if noone else on here responds. I'll check my Polyvore Sets to see if I have used the Chiffon Belts...I think maybe once or twice, but I can't remember. If not, I will be sure to add it to my FFM Blog for this coming week. :)

  90. Anyone try on or have the dream turtleneck sweater?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Can anyone tell me if the dream fabric is itchy and how much it pills? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  92. anon about the dream fabric: I wear a tee under my dream crewnecks, the ones from last fall. I couldn't stand not wearing something underneath.

There is some pilling, but I'm OK with it because I got them on sale. I mean, I'd prefer there not be any, of course, but so it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  93. a: I made 2 sets for the belts awhile back: Click Here and Here . I can put together something more Fall/Winter related using them if you like...just let me know. :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Katie: I'd have to pick the giraffe necklace! FFM has made a number of fab sets on polyvore with the necklace.

As for the Bella, my velvet in leaf green arrived yesterday. It's super beautiful and comfy. I also have the camel herringbone that I bought from ebay (same seller siopsynsam2005 who ships from the Philippines) two months ago. It's a bit scratchy around the neck but a turtleneck would help.

There are a number of velvet bellas on ebay in gold, navy etc. Not sure if these are outlet versions. Did the velvet bella come in gold?

    ReplyDelete
  95. la belle--is there any warmth to the dream sweaters? I need these for fall in NJ. They are on sale online

    ReplyDelete
  96. New Jersey anon: It's not a super heavy sweater (I am speaking about the crewnecks - those are the ones I'm familiar with) but I would describe it as warm. Worn over a t-shirt, that would definitely work in cooler temps, and because it's not a bulky sweater, I find they're great for layering under jackets.

Which item no. are you looking at?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Regarding the velvet bellas, according to my cat. from Sept. 07 the colors were black, deep chestnut (brown), welsh purple, riviera (deep blue) and leaf, or green. No gold.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Velvet bellas are sold out as well :(((

Thank you vivian for the style number!

FFM, I did actually find a couple of velvet bellas on ebay (I lost out on one - a leaf green - by a $1 a few days ago :( and have my eye on them. I was just a bit worried about ebay and whether the items i recieve would truly be NWOT as stated in the description vs. used...I'm looking for bellas in a size 12 or 14 and am currently watching/bidding on both a navy and leaf jacket on ebay, but both auctions are not scheduled to end until next week. Here's hoping I get them!

FFM, the polyvore sets look great...if it wouldn't be too much bother, I would LOVE to see some fall/winter sets incorporating these belts...for both a casual and professional office setting. Thank you so much!!!! (You are SO good at this btw!)

  99. I was wondering about the gold bellas on ebay...I didn't remember it coming in that colour...

    ReplyDelete
  100. la belle helene: Thanks for the color info! Now we know that the gold velvet Bellas on Ebay are probably outlet versions. It's wonderful that you have the catalog from Sept 07!

Does the catalog have the colors for the herringbone bella too?

    ReplyDelete
  101. one question - could the gold possibly be a store-only colour, like the dream-tie cardigan currently, which is sold in a pink colour in store but online is only navy/gray/yellow/purple?

    ReplyDelete
  102. This is OT, but I wanted to let kater know that I got my vest today. I received the gray one, but I love it! The fit is great - thanks for encouraging me to get the small. I think the medium would have been to big. Now, if the weather would just cool off a little bit more, I could wear it with a tee. :)

vivian: good to hear from you again! I thought of you when the bellas showed up online this week.

    ReplyDelete
  103. a: just keep checking the website every morning...just because there aren't any showing in inventory today, doesn't mean there may not be some tomorrow...fingers crossed for you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. FFM: thanks for the sizing info - I will go for the 6. I'd like the camel one like you got, but there aren't any in a 6 on there. I also like the leaf. I'll post what happens!

    ReplyDelete
  105. math teacher: Hi there! I was away for a few days but when I got back, I was frightened off again by the negativity. Glad that the dust has settled.

I'm so happy to hear that you got your vest! Are you pairing it with a white shirt or did you get a special shirt in cream for it?

Yes, so glad I didn't get the corduroy and wool bellas from the FS. So far, it appears that patience is still a pretty good strategy when it comes to J.Crew - as seen in the case of your vest and my Bella :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. a, I just received a velvet Bella, 12, Welsh purple this morning, and I'm not that crazy about it. I think I'm more of an Ecole person. How much were you hoping to pay for one?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Vivian,
The Bella herringbone came in light heather nut, heather coral, heather azalea, heather carbon, navy and black, according to Sept. 07 super-fantastic catalogue :-)

    ReplyDelete
  108. Beachbum - I was willing to pay about $100 for it - how much were you looking to get for the jacket?

You can reach me at as01bc@hotmail.com....I love the purple and am very interested in this jacket - please email me :)

    ReplyDelete
  109. michelle: keep an eye out on Ebay for the 6 in the Camel/Heather Nut, or email the seller I bought from to see if she has anymore. When I was watching for one the 6 sold out from under me, but then another was posted the next day and I snagged it. Good luck...let me know what happens!

    ReplyDelete
  110. vivian: So glad you are here today! Have you worn your giraffe necklace?

lbh: the tag on my Bella is color coded LHN, which makes sense...Light Heather Nut...thanks for all the info! :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. vivian: I'm going to try pairing it with white first. (I'm staying at my parent's house while they're out of town, so I don't have my white shirt here.) If I don't like that, then I'll order the ivory. It's not really white in the vest, but I think it might work. Hope so, b/c ivory tee's can be hard to find. Btw, congrats on your bellas. I'm still tossing around ordering one on ebay.

    ReplyDelete
  112. la belle helene: Thank you! Now my camel bella has a proper color name - light heather nut :)

Do you know if there's some sort of an online archive where I can look at the Sept 07 catalog? I can't ask you to scan the whole catalog and put it online!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Btw, has there been any consensus on when the website is updated these days? Is it back to mornings, and any particular days?

    ReplyDelete
  114. vivian,
Someone on here has, on earlier posts, had links to google archives of prior catalogues. I don't know if 2007 editions were on there, though, and I'm not sure what the link was. Hopefully someone else reads this and knows the link...

FFM: sometimes the codes can make for quite a guessing game :-)

    ReplyDelete
  115. FFM: Hi! Glad to be back again. I wore my Giraffe necklace for the first time yesterday - copying your Giraffe Necklace Look #1 with platinum gold las palmas bag and belle skirt in fog. Got many compliments, yayyy! I want to get the Lulu heels when they get reduced.

Ahem, the fact that I have the exact same HLN Bella as yours makes me feel my wardrobe has improved by one huge leap and bound!

    ReplyDelete
  116. vivian and lbh: I was the one with the links to the old catalogs...but unfortunately the 2007 isn't in them, and I haven't been able to find one, either. The link for the other older catalogs is Here , in case you are interested in looking. :)

    ReplyDelete
  117. math teacher: I agree white will work great with the vest!

Are you looking at velvet or herringbone? And which colors? I was curious about the gold, until la belle helene confirmed that gold is not one of the Bella colors in the Sept 07 catalog.

    ReplyDelete
  118. FFM, thanks - too bad they're not up to date :-(

    ReplyDelete
  119. math teacher: I would like the azalea, but I bet it's going to be hard to find in my size. I would also like the purple velvet, although I like the black and green, too.

    ReplyDelete
  120. vivian: *a* raised a good question about the gold possibly being an in-store only color...I wonder if there is anyway to confirm this? Hopefully someone on the blog will have some insight. :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. math teacher: You and I like the same hard-to-find colors.

Guess you're too excited abt the bellas and addressed your last post to yourself. I understand :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. math teacher: YAY...you finally got your vest! Congratulations, that is just fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  123. ffm: Thanks for the URL for the catalog archives! It still makes nice eye candy for breaks at work, even if 2007 isnt included.

It'd be great if someone here could answer that question. If not, I may have to ask the seller. If you look at some of the ebay pixs, the gold looks bright yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  124. a, I just sent you an email. :)

    ReplyDelete
  125. In regards to the gold bella, I recommend asking the seller point-blank about its origins. I've noticed some sellers write "bella, fiona, ecole" next to their listings for a jacket, obviously it's to garner as many hits as possible. Usually the listing itself will clarify, but when in doubt, ask, ask, ask.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I never saw the gold bella in the store last year (was thinking about the blue velvet one).

I don't recall seeing that color at the outlet either - they had a sea salt cord one.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think I have the fall 07 catalog memorized by heart! The gold velvet bella is actually...honey glaze (HGL)and is an outlet fall 08 version, there was no such thing as a honey glaze velevt bella last year-catalog or instore. I think that is the question? And the herringbone ones were black, LHN, HAZ (heather azelea), gray, Heather coral or something along those lines, orangish, and black. The outlet versions are okay, better than a lot of outlet stuff but not worth the $ and not AS nice. Isn't it funny how we are spending more time discussing 07 when there was just a roll out for 08....

    ReplyDelete
  128. okay, I just reread my post and I addressed my comment to myself instead of to vivian! :D Boy, I must be tired. That's not good, since I have two papers to write tonight. I'll have to proof them very carefully! :P

    ReplyDelete
  129. math teacher: It's okay. Good luck with your 2 papers! I'm multitasking between this blog and SPSS windows (cleaning up data for analysis) and stifling a few yawns. It's only midweek and I'm tired - the most excited I ever got was yesterday when my velvet bella arrived.

What are you writing about in your 2 papers?

    ReplyDelete
  130. caw: Thanks for the info! I just shot a question to the ebay seller before I read your post.

    ReplyDelete
  131. you are welcome!! isn't this sick how I know all this useless info???? But pay attention esp on ebay b/c you want to make sure you get something that you think is retail!!! I also live near an outlet and go there often so scope it out......

    ReplyDelete
  132. Oh, here's the quick answer from the seller of the gold velvet bellas to my pointblank question abt whether this is a Factory Store version/color:

Honestly, I do not know -- I just know that it is marked FA '08. Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  133. math teacher - I just emailed you, but am sooooo upset. how in the world did you get a silver vest? I KNOW I put the wheat color on hold for you. I just know it!!!! Are you going to call pentagon city and ask how this happened??? I am so unbelievably sorry, and really think they should send you the CORRECT one.

as for the gold velvet bella - it is most definitely from the outlet THIS fall. My advice? Stay far far away!!! It is not lined, and is not nearly as nice as the *real" bellas from last year.

    ReplyDelete
  134. i also have a few bellas and unpacked them yesterday for fall wearing! La belle, love the idea of light pink under the pink one. Had not done that!

    ReplyDelete
  135. vivian: I don't have exciting topics. One is a watch, read, and react paper - I had a chapter to read and 3 dvd segments to watch - all about school library stuff. The other paper is a write-up after interviewing two teens about their library usage.

    ReplyDelete
  136. for those of you that just got your bellas this week, how did it come so fast?? like audrey at 2:19, mine is still in "open" limbo...

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  137. math teacher: Definitely sounds more interesting than what I'm working on right now.

I just read kater's post about your vest. I didn't realize the store sent you the wrong color. Hope it gets sorted out soon.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I agree with kater, it is not as nice, maybe if it were 19.99 but they still want a lot.
vivian-the outlet pieces always say the current year unless they have inherited stuff from last year retail, which happens every so often!

    ReplyDelete
  139. kater: when I called last week, she could only find one vest on hold marked for Mary Beth. I think she just assumed someone had put the wrong name on it since it was the right vest (style) and size. When she described it as gray, I said it should be tan, gray, and gold, and she said that's what it was. I probably should have made her look harder, but when she confirmed the color choice, I went with it. So, after thinking about it the next day at work, I decided to call and verify. So, the nice sa looked up my order and said it was the silver one and that it had already left the store. It's okay really, I like the gray one. Really, I do. Don't be upset, I'm not. It may even be a better color for me. And, I ordered the silver mocs Friday, and I think they'll look good together.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm sorry, but I have to rant. I am so mad at J.Crew right now that I could go crazy!!!!!!!

I placed an order this weekend, and it came today. The sweater I ordered came fine, but they didn't send me by Bella jacket. The bag it came in said Bella, but in the bag was a totally different coat. AND it was the wrong size! And they sent me size 8 pants instead of size 0 pants. I can't get the coat I wanted because it is sold out, and the pants I wanted aren't available either! They gave me no recourse other than a refund, even though they screwed up by sending me the wrong items! uggggggggh

    ReplyDelete
  141. math teacher - I still want to cry!!!!! when you called the next day and they said it was silver, did they at least offer to send you the right one????

I'm going to the store again tomorrow to make a return. do you want me to look again and we can do an "exchange" if I can find it in wheat? I will totally take the silver one as I feel like this is all my fault!!!!

waaah! am so upset, although it's very kind of you to tell me that it's really ok on your end...:(

    ReplyDelete
  142. kater: I like the silver one and I'm keeping it. Please don't worry about it - I ended up with the one I was suppose to have. :) I'm just happy I got the vest. Now, if they had sent me the gold one, I'd have already been on the phone! :D And, when I called the next day and discovered that the wrong one had been shipped, really all she could tell me was sorry. I told her it was okay, that it was my second favorite, and that I was just happy to be getting it. Maybe she could have made an offer, but she didn't and I'm okay with it.

    ReplyDelete
  143. vivian, that's definitely a factory store bella - I'm certain the 07 didn't come in gold, even in stores.

caw, baby, you know I am right there with you about the fall '07 collection :-)

    ReplyDelete
  144. math teacher: you're so sweet, but I'm still really really really sorry. and very mad at the pentagon city store.

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  145. anon@5.56: Did you get overnight shipping? It helps push the order further along. If it's standard shipping for low inventory items, the chances of getting short-shipped are higher. You should call and check the status. Sometimes it's packaged and ready to go but just sitting there waiting for UPS.

Hope you receive your bella soon!

    ReplyDelete
  146. I know la belle, somehow we always find each other to discuss it. I am just so blah about this year. $400 sweaters and jackets. No thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  147. kater: okay, stop apologizing. I'm still amazed that you were willing to put it on hold for me, someone who's basically a stranger. I would still love for some of us on here to get together one day. Wouldn't that be fun? And, the sa probably should have looked a little harder, since I ended up with someone else's vest - did she end up with mine? But, I let it go. Had I become suspicious sooner, I could have "fixed" it, but I promise, I DO like the silver one. I had a hard time choosing when the silver one came out - I don't know if FFM remembers, but she made up several outfits using the silver vest just to show me that it was as versatile as the wheat one. So, now we won't be twins in color, just in style. :)

    ReplyDelete
  148. vivian- did not get overnight shipping... i didn't even budget for the jacket, which just turned up on final sale, let alone the overnight shipping charge! but my order has a tracking number, so i'm hopeful.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Has anyone been to the Pentagon City store recently? Just wondering about the sale selection.

    ReplyDelete
  150. ohmygosh! The dream open cardigan is on sale for $100, and with the in-store extra 40% off I can get it for $60! Now I just have to make sure that a) they are still there and b) they are on sale...

    ReplyDelete
  151. Ok, I have four Bellas - ok - I'm obsessed. I bought a velvet green last year, and have bought three herringbone bellas from siopsynsam2005 and she is wonderful! I have posted a review of her before, but with all the chatter about her bellas, I wanted to post again and tell you how wonderful she is! She does also sell under the name of momsclutteredcloset. She told me that ebay was hassling her about having too many J Crew items in her store so she opened another store. Her Bellas are "original" from '07 - she buys them at the factory where they are made in the Philippines - the factory makes a set number for J Crew, but when it comes time to buy them, often J Crew does not buy them all. I have asked her to find a certain color and size for me and she has been able to - she rocks!!! I highly recommend her.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I forgot to add... one of them is an azalea :) ahhhhh... so wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Has anyone noticed how many new things are already gone or low? The platinum tweed dress and jacket are only one or two sizes left and the sequiend tweed ecole is already gone. I guess the higher prices aren't bothering everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I have one Velvet Bella in Leaf. Are the sleeves supposed to be worn down or folded up? I'm only 5'3" and the sleeves on the regular is too long for me. Are you folding them upas well? I did that but found the look to be a little "untidy". Also, how are others keeping their foundation from smudging onto the collar?

    ReplyDelete
  155. OK, I wanted to give a quick review of the Chiffon-bow City Tee Cardigan. I put it on the second it arrived and I have NOT removed it since (and it look great with the polo that I purchased awhile back from FFM!!!) I got the XS and while it is a tiny bit snug in the arms it is just so, so comfortable!! The material is quite stretchy as well so I don't think that there would be a problem wearing a blouse or tank or tee under it. I got the Champagne color which is a soft ivory (and did I mention that it looks incredible with black?? LOL!) I used the PEEKABOO coupon and paid $53.35 (which I know is quite a bit more than many of you will have to pay with the instore sale going on!) The color is such a nice neutral that you can toss it on over almost anything and look very pretty and polished. :)

crew_girl: I did turn up the cuffs on my velvet Bella and really like it that way! If I left them down then my hands would completely disappear! :)

FFM and others: I placed a bid tonight from the same seller that you are all raving about (bidding on the Heather Nut Bella). Keeping my fingers crossed that I will win, but if not, I will contact her about finding one for me! Thanks for the info. I appreciate all of you!

    ReplyDelete
  156. mine also offered 40% plus student teacher 15% i should have paid over $180 full price but managed to get away with an argyle sweater, tie front blouse and belt for under 50. - erin, garden state plaza, paramus nj

    ReplyDelete
  157. erin: this is good news for me - garden state is where i saw the dream open sweater? You didn't manage to see if they were on sale, did you? I know they had them - now if only the extra % off will last till Saturday!

    ReplyDelete
  158. FFM: Thanks for posting the link with the old catalogs--Fascinating!! I could wile away far too much time looking through these. Really interesting to see how J. Crew has up'ed the style quotient in the past few years, and to what cuts/styles are still appealing and truly timeless to my eye. There were things in each catalog I looked at that I would still consider buying today!!

    ReplyDelete
  159. I really don't know what is going on with sizes on cashmere sweaters with season. I just got my crewneck classic cardigan and it fits really big! The only reason I even got it is because I got a classic crewneck cargigan on final sale for cheap recently and was really psyched until i found a hole in it. So i called them up and asked for exchange. Of course they didnt have those sales ones anymore. So I asked if I could get a full priced classic cardigan for the same sales price. So they did send me this one and its disappointing because the fit is nothing like the cardigan i just returned (and really wished I didnt). It fits so baggy, sleeves are super long and the look is just NOT good. I got XS, so I can't size down. The only reason I am keeping it is because the price was so low and the color is beautiful (royal violet). I just wonder why change the fit (esp since its called CLASSIC). If it ain't broken don't fix it! No?

    ReplyDelete
  160. jcrewjunkie: Congrats on your cardi! I'm so glad you love it! Now you and I can be twinkies! :)

    ReplyDelete
  161. Mack: Thanks for the rec! I've contacted her as well, so here's hoping.

Some reviews, in case anyone is wavering on sale items:

    Whisper Lame Tank: 96621
This is probably one of my favorite jcrew purchases, though it fit needs to be adjusted for me. It really is incredibly light and breezy, perfect for a hot summer evening (or So-Cal's perpetual summer). The straps are just wide enough, and in the right location to cover up a bra strap--perfect! The color is true to what the website shows. It's a bit bright, but as it's a tank, it should be easy enough to tone down. Since I normally wear petite sizes, it's a little long as well, and I will have the hem raised by an inch. The cut is quite airy (the fit on the model is pretty accurate), and since I prefer a tighter cut, I will have it taken in at the waist and hips. The zipper on the side makes that possible.

    Florentine-Print silk sundress: 95247

As a dress, it doesn't work for me. It really would probably work best for someone less well-endowed, but it looks like a tent on me. However, if I slip it down to wear as a high-waisted dress, it suddenly becomes a fascinating piece. Though I'm 5'2, as a skirt, it hits right around the ankles, so I can wear it with either flats or heels. I paired it today with a simple white button-down shirt (closely tailored), tucked into this dress worn as a skirt, with a soft, wide, black leather belt to pull the whole thing together. I also threw on Jcrew's mary jane shoes, and the cooper chino jacket in rhuburb. I wouldn't recommend it as a dress unless you don't need a bra, but do try it as a skirt...it's flattering and fun, and surprisingly versatille.

    Whisper lame dress skirt: 95056

I'm torn. I love the idea of this shirt...and it also fits me perfectly (note: most jcrew shirts are too big on me, so you might want to size down). But it's SO disco-ball-bright that I'm not sure how to wear it (FFM to the rescue?). Unlike the tank version (which naturally lends itself to a night out), the style seems to suggest formality, but the color and sparkle certainly belie it. The only way I can think of making this work is to wear it open, with a white tank underneath, and a pair of tight jeans and black high heels. And of course, that's very much a "evening" look. I'd love to hear other outfit suggestions for this one...

  163. sorry, screwed up my last review:

    Whisper lame dress skirt: 95056
is SUPPOSED to be: Whisper lame slim shirt. The item number is correct.

    ReplyDelete
  164. circumfession,
I have the whisper lame slim shirt in size tall6 and absolutely love it tucked in to my white chino shorts or white matchstick jeans. I have the heather graphite color and wear it with the J.Crew skinny metallic belt, almost no jewelry and Banana Rep grey kitten heel sandals. In any case, it does look great with white.

    ReplyDelete
  165. magnolia: Thank you! That makes sense: white (or maybe black) wouldn't compete with that sparkle.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Arden Fair Mall (Sacramento, California) is 40% off.

    ReplyDelete
  167. auryane: I wear my Soft Graphite Whisper Lame Slim Shirt with white cropped pants from Neiman Marcus. I do not tuck it in and don't wear anything under it (except, of course, my Mighty Miracle Bra!!! LOL!!) I wear the J Crew Silver Snakeskin Capri sandals with it and silver jewelery. When you put the flat sandals with it you are able to "dress it down" which is nice for a casual evening out...or shopping. :)

    ReplyDelete
  168. weab: Don't forget...we both have (along with your mom) the Gray Astrid w/berries as well!! Woo hoo...we are so, so fashionable!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  169. I forgot that I also got the Leopard Lawn blouse and it made me dizzy it was so busy. I normally have an emotional bond with "leopard" since my 101 year old grandma (still alive and active) wore the pattern quite often! However, I simply could not get enthused over this blouse even though I really wanted to! Bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I haven't called my store to check the % but I am going to hit them up Friday for a coat trying on extravaganza :D

    ReplyDelete
  171. auryane: are you saying you would recommend sizing DOWN on the whisper lame tank? I thinking of getting it and would like to know your opinion! I'm long waisted, so the length shouldn't be a problem either way ... but I might be between sizes - especially with such a billowy cut!

    ReplyDelete
  172. I would be really, really leery about buying any kind of out of stock item from an eBay seller in Asia who has a high volume. The items are most likely fakes, stolen from the factory or gray market unsanctioned goods, regardless of what kind of story you get.

Regarding website update times, I have had several conversations with customer service about this. Each time they have told me that new items could appear on the website 24 hours a day. That being said, I have been stalking really hard to find out of stock items over the past few weeks and have had incredible luck finding and receiving almost everything on my list. I have had the most luck in the morning. Something that got cancelled from a weekend order yesterday, that I called about last night, had 65 units in stock this morning. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  173. i ordered the heathered hoodie today, item number 96984. i have been stalking it for awhile, and finally it's now at 29.99, looks like such a comfie piece, and can also be worn out with a pair of tights and boots. anyone has this hoodie? any reviews?

  174. Alexis...wait, wait, wait -- The Vacaville, CA Factory Store has bellas in herringbone, velvet & cord for 30% off at least through Thur, according to the SA I spoke w/yesterday. I cannot confirm that they have an additional percentage off on a total purchase.

Today I went to the Pleasanton, CA store and they had an additional 40% off Final Sale.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Oh -- and clearance accessories in Pleasanton were an additional 40%, not an additional 25% off.

  176. lindsey:

I think it depends on how you would it to fit. My measurements are a bit strange, so it's hard for me to gauge. Normally, size 0 (not 0P) jcrew tops are either perfect, or slightly too tight through the bust, and too loose through the waist for me. This top is slightly loose on the bust (though not so loose that I'd have that part taken in), and definitely loose on the waist. the bust feels a bit larger than usual, but by no more than an inch or two, while the waist seems "normal" to me. If you want it to look more-or-less as it does on the model, and you have an average-to-large bust (for your size), I'd say with your usual size. If you are smaller-busted, or want it to be a bit more fitted, I'd size down.

Overall, I found the whisper lame to be considerably smaller than the similar zoe or lana tops. Then again, both the zoe and lana ran huge on me.

    Jcrewjunkie:

Thank you! White does seem to be the key with these bright metallic shirts! I have pair of white linen pants from Jcrew (where else), so I'll test-drive your suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  177. la belle: I have the shell pink Scoop Neck tee and just tried it on with my Azalea Belle...WOW!! Thanks for the excellent (and beautiful) suggestion!

    ReplyDelete
  178. I snagged two velvet Bellas on final sale over the weekend but will post them on ebay, they don't work for me, but darn I wish they fit, the velvet is lush and gorgeous. If you are interested in either, I can email you when I put them up. Leaf in size 6 and black in size 8. New with tags, of course, still in catalog bag. cheribanks at gmail dot com.

    ReplyDelete
  179. auryane: I am 'blessed' with a small bust line (haha) so I think I will size down with no problem! Thanks so much for your help!

  180. Anyone have these or the same shoe (even in another fabric) that can tell me how they run, fit, feel?

  181. Covert5:

I have the patent leather version. I took a chance on those (final sale), since Jcrew shoes never fit my wide feet. Surprisingly, they fit perfectly. I'm normally precisely a size 6, and this runs true to size. I'd say that the footbed is slightly on the wide side (or maybe the peep toe just allows for more give?). It really is a comfortable, beautiful pair. I normally struggle to walk in heels, but with some grips on the outside, and insolia on the inside, I have no problem walking around in these.

  182. lindsey - I agree with auryane. Maybe size down if you have a small bust just to cut down on the volume-osity around the middle. It's not maternity looking, but if you can size down, it is probably best. Personally I am a 34B+/C, usually wear a 4 and took a 4 in it for the chest size.

All -- I bought the black dress w/the gold circles on it for $59 or $69 plus 40%. It looks SO cute with cardigans! I got a 2 in it.

Also -- I haven't seen the eggplant dream in any of the stores I've been in. It either didn't cross my radar or maybe they only put that color online?

  183. Anony@8:59 I found a hole in two of my cashmere Clementina jackets this summer and had to exchange them. Also, noticed that the HEATHER PLUM cashmere cardigan is basically sold out in most sizes! I really wanted this but not willing to pay $168 for JCrew cashmere as the quality is just not that great!

STEP: That is really too bad about your orders. I have had the wrong item in a correctly labeled bag two times before. I really sucks b/c once I got two bikini tops and no bottom!!! and of course the bottom was sold out:(

That is why I tend not to buy last seasons stuff on sale b/c you can get screwed over big time and get the wrong thing. JCrew needs to do a better job of checking their returns. Once I got a wool jacket that had been worn!!It had a stain on the elbow and dirt around the cuffs!

  184. I tend to agree with whomever said the Bellas from out of this country are likely stolen or not on the up and up....I had a boyfriend who worked with police in various third world type countries and the stories he could tell me!!!! Ebay is great in all but be careful:) Why would ebay care if this lady had a bunch of JCrew stuff....something isn't right there....

  188. I am just so bummed. Everything (about 7 items) in my shopping cart are very low stock with just a few left...not going to make it to the sales. This has never happened to me before....Is this the new JCrew? No sales? All I used to do was just wait. I can't afford JCrew's prices otherwise:(

  189. OT: So what is everyone's general opinion on the Floral Ruffle Astrid without the ruffle on the cuffs? Not so sure once the picture was changed online....

  190. Jcrewjunkie,
So glad to hear you like the pink with azalea bella combo :-)

Regarding ordering last year's stuff, or any sale stuff, and it not being the correct item - I'm not worried about that, because in such cases, returns have not been a hassle. I mean, the "final sale" doesn't apply if J.Crew messes up the order.

I've been ordering from last fall's selections this week - So a year later, fall 2007 is still impacting my credit card :-)

  191. I don't have a way to make easy returns...long story...not living in the US right now so when I have had mistakes...and there have been several on JCrew's part...I am out...so I stay away from final sale OLD items....I've learned...

  192. anon 7:42 - It looks like JC is carrying less inventory, I have also been surprised by the way things are selling out. Is a glitch in the system or is it due to the economic times?

  193. Perhaps J.Crew doesn't really know how much inventory of the newer items they have either? Just a thought...it's apparent they have severe inventory and warehouse issues, so it seems quite realistic that the issue could extend to the new items, as well. Not to mention that J.Crew would rather have customers buy at full price (as would all retailers) instead of waiting for the sale. They are going to make sure and market the items as limited quantity...this causes a sense of urgency for the customer that most likely will make them feel they have to buy NOW or else miss out.

  194. J Crew on 5th Ave and 17th St in NYC has 40% off FS items.

  195. i have a hard time believing things are actually selling out so fast. i agree with FFM, it's a ploy to make you buy faster and at full price. i've been disappointed in the past by items i'm eyeing selling out in my size or all-together, only to see them on sale a month later. patience is a virtue, my friends. it's worth playing the waiting game with a company that mass-produces most items. look at all the bellas coming up now!

  196. I believe many of the newer items that appear sold out will be available later, based on an experience from last year where a Fall item I wanted was supposedly sold out for all of October then became available again about a month later and didn't sell out again until Feb. My guess is that based on demand they see in initial sales, they decide how many more of those items to order (rather than producing large quantities in the beginning when they're less sure how an item will sell).
